How to Save Money at Bean Veterinary Services, PLLC

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

First, thank you Dr. Ford for showing my mom exactly how little compassion your clinic has. My mom lost my sister, and my sister's dog is one of the last living connections she has to my sister. She brought her dog in because she believed it was an abscessed tooth, only to learn there was also a mass that needed to be removed. Instead of receiving reassurance, clear communication, or compassion, she left the appointment feeling confused and alone. Dr. Ford barely explained what was going on, prescribed only one week of antibiotics, and told my mom the procedure would need to be scheduled. When she called to schedule it, she was told the earliest opening wasn't until the end of August. She then asked a very reasonable question: if surgery was that far away, would her dog need additional antibiotics? She reached out multiple times and never received a response. As her daughter, watching her be ignored while she desperately tried to get care for a dog that means the world to her was incredibly upsetting. No pet owner should have to repeatedly call a veterinary office simply to receive guidance on continuing treatment for an active infection. Thankfully, she sought a second opinion. The difference was night and day. The new veterinarian was kind, thorough, answered every question, confirmed the diagnosis, scheduled the procedure for the following week, and quoted a price that was over $1,000 less. Whether your clinic was unwilling or unable to perform the procedure, honesty and communication would have been far more professional than leaving my mom in limbo with no follow-up. Pet owners trust veterinarians during some of the most stressful moments of their lives. Ignoring calls, failing to provide continuity of care, and showing little empathy is unacceptable. My mom deserved better. More importantly, her dog deserved better. I sincerely hope no other family has to experience the same level of indifference when they are simply trying to get their beloved pet the care it needs.

Being new to the area, I did a lot of research looking for a vet who cares for their patients over profit and is honest and compassionate. When my Gracie first meets anyone she is hesitant because of her past life and where she came from. When her visit was over, she walked up to both the tech and vet and allowed them to pet her. That tells me she is comfortable with them so that is the proof they are the right choice for her vet.

I entrusted this clinic with one of the most important members of my family—my late daughter's dog. I came in because I believed she had an abscessed tooth, and after the examination I was told there was also a mass that would need to be removed. Unfortunately, the level of communication and follow-up I received was deeply disappointing. During the appointment, Dr. Ford provided very little explanation about my dog's condition or what to expect moving forward. Given the seriousness of the diagnosis, I left feeling confused rather than informed or reassured. I was sent home with one week of antibiotics and told the procedure would need to be scheduled. When I called to schedule the surgery, I was told the earliest available appointment was the end of August. I then asked whether my dog would need additional antibiotics since only a week's supply had been prescribed. Despite reaching out multiple times, I never received a response. Being ignored while trying to secure ongoing care for a pet with an active dental infection and oral mass is unacceptable. Because I could not get answers or timely treatment, I sought a second opinion. The difference was remarkable. The new veterinarian performed a thorough examination, clearly explained the findings, confirmed that the tooth and mass should be removed, scheduled the procedure for the following week, and quoted a price that was more than $1,000 less than what I had been given by this clinic. My experience left me feeling that my concerns—and more importantly, my dog's well-being—were not a priority. Whether the procedure was outside of Dr. Fords comfort level or the clinic simply lacked the availability to provide timely care, that should have been communicated honestly. Pet owners deserve transparency, prompt follow-up, and clear communication, especially when they are trying to make urgent medical decisions for a beloved family member. I cannot recommend this clinic or Dr. Ford based on my experience. Compassion, communication, and continuity of care matter just as much as medical knowledge, and unfortunately, those were the areas where this clinic fell far short.

Very good vet. They took great care of my cats and checked them out. They could have easily tacked on unnecessary services (teeth cleaning) but advised me not to. My only complaint is that they do not offer solencia for my cats arthritis. But all the staff are really friendly. The bill was reasonable too it was $160 to get both cats checked out.

I am so thankful for this veterinary clinic! I was away with my family on a cruise with limited access to communication. My mother-in-law was playing fetch with my dogs to wear them out, because they were very antsy with us being gone as long as we were, when my two dogs got into a fight. My poor mother-in-law was terrified, and without me having cell service I was able to communicate with the clinic via email and there was no time wasted on their end in getting us a response. They were able to guide my mother-in-law on how to handle the situation until the next morning when my two dogs could be seen by them. They set up an appointment for first thing in the morning and saw both of my dogs and took great care of them. Mind you my dogs have never been seen there before and they were able to pull their records quickly from another veterinary office in the valley. I was expecting a very high bill for the ordeal and was very pleased when the bill came and it was more than half of what I was expecting. I’m so grateful for this clinic and they care that they provide provided for my babies.
