How to Save Money at Riverwalk Animal Hospital & Urgent Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our indoor kitten acquired some unwanted passengers which ultimately gave her tapeworms. We were so worried and began calling animal hospitals in our area that were open on the weekends. Their initial fee was well over $100 just to walk in the door and they were very short on the phone with very little compassion. We decided to look a bit further out of our town and found this gem of a place! Their exam fee was almost half what I was quoted in multiple places. Sheryl at the front desk was so sweet, compassionate and informative. I didn’t feel like just a number. I decided to schedule an appointment for later that day with Dr Rubin. As soon as I walked in the door I was greeted with a smile and felt at home. Very clean establishment with complimentary snacks , treats , water and coffee. The vet tech John was so funny, compassionate and professional. Our kitten was so comfortable even though it wasn’t the best day for her. Dr Rubin was also very professional and informative. His honestly and willingness to help us, solidified our gut feeling that we were in the right place. We will sacrifice the drive and select them as our primary vet from now on. Thank you Riverwalk Team for the amazing experience and making our kitten feel better.

I met Dr.Rubin in 2022(he was still in Deltona) when I had to put one of my dogs down. He was amazing with my Sally and made a impression on me that I will never forget. Then in 2023 he was the doctor again for my dog Wee Willie Winkie and I swear he saved his life. I should have followed him when I found out he left but I did not. Fast forward to 2025 and it was Willie's yearly check up a few days after his check up he developed a serious cough so I called the vet a week later and they gave me cough tabs even though I told them he needed steriods and antibiotics. After 2 days of the cough tabs with no improvement I took him back this time they gave him some steriods. He still showed no signs of improvment so I called back again and was told they would not give him antibiotics without a visit(even though he had been there twice in 2 weeks) it was at that moment that I chose to call Dr. Rubin. I wish I could describe the feeling of peace as soon as Dr.Rubin came thru the door. I can finally take a breath because I know now that Willie is in the best hands he could possibly be. I regret not getting back to Dr.Rubin faster. He and his staff are amazing and like me you will not regret your choice bringing your pet here. Thank you Dr.Rubin and staff for being so outstanding and taking care of my Willie

I want to draw the attention of all pets owners. On 4/19/25, my baby Yorkie had a scary incident. He stepped on a fishing hook, and in a panic, I rushed to the nearest veterinary clinic Riverwalk Animal Hospital. The staff there examined him - they weighed him, asked his age, and took a look at his paw. I was then told that he would need sedation, his paw would have to be shaved, and they’d need to cut into it to remove the hook. While I was still trying to process this, my husband arrived at the clinic. He came into the exam room, looked at our dog’s paw, and within 15-20 seconds, gently removed the hook himself! No anesthesia. No cutting. No surgery. Just a calm, simple removal. The nurse took the hook and left the room, saying she needed to show it to the doctor. We didn’t even get a chance to take a photo of the hook, or to speak with a doctor. But again- my husband removed the hook. Not the vet. Yet, we were still charged $85 for the examination. Honestly, I would’ve accepted the fee if actual medical care had been provided. But I can’t help feeling that this was incredibly dishonest. My main concern is: why was the vet so quick to recommend anesthesia and cutting into such a tiny, 7-pound dog for something that clearly didn’t require it? This experience left me feeling like the clinic was more focused on making money than on providing genuine care. Please be cautious. Ask questions. Trust your instincts. Not every vet has your pet’s best interest at heart.

I've brought two dogs in within one week and am very happy with staff, service and Dr. Rubin. They take time with your pet, ask questions, and don't "throw the kitchen sink" at a problem to try to resolve it. The facility is clean and staff is friendly. And being open 7 days-a-week until 10pm provides a great peace-of-mind to me, should something happen after normal business hours.

My elderly cat, Callie, was having trouble walking. She kept falling over. I took her to Riverwalk Animal hospital. Not going to lie, I thought I wouldn't be coming back home with her. After a 5 to 10 minute wait we were taken back to the exam room. The vet tech we had was so wonderful! After getting her information and a look at Callie she told me the Dr. Would be in there shortly. Believe it or not he was there in just about 2 minutes. He examined her and told me that she was having pain in her lower back area. He then gave me options, to get x-rays, labs ect. He was not pushy and he explained what these tests would show. They came out with an itemized total for the costs of each procedure, so I knew the cost before things were done. I chose to just give her medicine that would dull the pain and take the swelling out. I asked that if she wasn't better/I changed my mind could I come and get the other meds/test. Yes, I could. The vet tech was so wonderful with my Callie, she was petting her and talking softly and loving to her. She gave her a hug, pet and a kiss before putting her back in her carrier. No money can pay for the love she gave my Callie. Prices were more than fair as well. I will be switching all my pets to Riverwalk! Thank you for actually caring for the animals. Not just caring they bring in money.
