How to Save Money at VEG ER for Pets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can’t thank this emergency veterinary team enough for the amazing care they gave to my baby. From the moment we arrived, everyone was so kind, compassionate, and professional. They treated my dog with such gentle care, kept me informed every step of the way, and patiently answered all of my questions. It gave me so much comfort knowing my dog was in such capable and caring hands. I’m truly grateful for the support, compassion, and excellent care we received during such a stressful time. Amazing team !!!

Dr.Leguizamo, Dr. McKinney, the nurses and the front desk staff are absolute angels and I'm forever grateful. My cat had a decreased appetite, decreased BMs and not playful anymore so I knew she needed to be seen. I called the H street location first since it's physically closer but they were already very busy so they recommended I call the Georgetown location. I believe I spoke to Dr McKinney, who listened to my concerns and also recommended for my cat to come in and advised about potential wait time after diagnostics. Upon arrival, I was immediately greeted and assigned an exam table to sit at. Tabitha is a spicy cat but the Dr. Leguizamo quickly devised a plan to make her comfortable so the team could adequately examine and treat her. Unfortunately, she had to stay overnight for pancreatitis and other ailments which was understandably pricey given the level of care needed (it was an emergency afterall). The doctor explained everything clearly and her lovely disposition kept me at ease. Yes, there were times I was waiting just like at a human ER, but if you're familiar with how ERs operate, the sickest are priority and a few more urgent pets arrived who needed immediate assistance while my cat and I waited for results or for medication to kick in, so everything was perfectly reasonable and SOC. They were able to adequately address my cat's needs and their other patients. I was even granted the opportunity to stay overnight with my cat but I had to return home. The compassion, dedication and knowledge/education the whole team had was clearly displayed and made me feel at ease as I left for the night. I KNEW she was in great hands. I received texts overnight with updates and in the morning before I returned. There was wifi available and the nurse set up a little desk and chair in front of my cat's kennel so I could get some work done. I got to be part of Tabitha's care every step of the way. Dr McKinney devised a plan to allow me to take Tabitha home instead of an additional night in the ER and I did not feel judged but rather very supported in my decision. I truly can go on and on about my experience. Overall, VEG ER in Georgetown is truly amazing and has a WONDERFUL staff. I hope to never have come back but if I need to, I'd definitely go back to this location. I unequivocally highly recommend them if your fur baby baby has an emergency. Also, they do validate parking so it's only $10 at the Ritz Carlton/Colonial Parking Garage around the corner on 22nd St (it's easy to miss the garage so you'll need to be on the lookout). Below are before and after pics. It's been 3 days since admission and my cat is definitely more like herself again and eating! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I don't even know where to begin with this, as there is so much to express. We were on our way home from Southern Florida for a final few last days in the sun, since that is what our best friend Sadie loved so so much (we are from new England and is bitter cold this time of year). Sadie was a 13 year old lab mutt, who was the smartest, sassiest, and most loving dog who I rescued when she was 6 months old. She embraced the sun as she was originally from North Carolina, you could just watch the sun wrap around her and she basked in its warmth. Her mood changed so much when we started getting into the sunny states on our way down. She loved exploring the beautiful coast line, taking a naps on the beach, and visiting the pier. The last night before the trip home we were all on the porch at the hotel, warm and peaceful. She was looking at me like she always does, but this time it felt like an instant connection between the closest best friends ever, and I could feel her say "Dad, what an awesome ride we have had in this life together, but I'm tired". When we left to head home, sadly we had to stop in Washington D.C. as Sadie's health started to decline quickly. My girlfriend Maggie found VEG on Google and we rushed there, giving them a heads up that we were coming. I pulled up and there was a very nice man at the door urgently waiting. He and I rushed Sadie in and they instantly took her in and assessed her. Sadly I had to make the most heart breaking decision I have ever had to make in my life, and say good bye to my best friend. I cannot express how thankful I am to everyone on the VEG team that day. I instantly felt the trust to put Sadie's life in your hands. I am still in shock but also grateful from the level of dedication, compassion, and care that they give to all the furry patients. Not to mention the honesty, there was an error on the billing where we were charged extra and did not even notice it until they reached out to us and corrected it instantly. That right there is nearly impossible to find these days. Thank you again. Thank you for all you did for us during that heart breaking experience, and Thank you for the condolence card. Sadie, you will forever be missed, never forgotten, and absolutely irreplaceable. You are conning a snack from God right now I am sure. I will see you at the rainbow bridge.

This is a great place to go in an emergency. Like most people, I ended up here under stressful circumstances. My dog had a severe case of gastroenteritis—I’ll spare you the details on the discharges and excretions—and I arrived sobbing at 4 a.m. The team was incredibly kind, attentive, and clearly competent. I really appreciate the concept at VEG, where you can see your pet at all times. I was worried that my dog's separation anxiety would make things worse, but I was able to stay close at all times. Most importantly, my dog was treated in a timely manner (and cured!). Yes, the bill can be high (hello, DC), but pet insurance covered everything for me. Dear reader, if I may leave you with but two essential truths: This is a great emergency clinic with skilled, compassionate staff—and you absolutely MUST get pet insurance.

The staff at VEG were absolutely wonderful. I really appreciated the open concept. Seeing the doctors and the staff dealing with other pets was very reassuring. They also did the utmost to keep my dog comfortable during what was a very stressful time for him. The staff and the doctors were kind and caring while professional at the same time. They kept me informed the entire time and involve me in the decision-making about his care. Being able to stay close to my dog while they treated him, allowed me to comfort him and keep him calm, which really helps if you have an anxious pet. I needed to call to ask some follow up questions the next day and I was able to speak with a doctor right away. All I could keep thinking was I wish my regular Vet experience was as good. While I am hoping to not need an emergency room anytime soon, I am looking forward to them opening a location slightly closer to me.
