How to Save Money at The Cat Doctor

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my cat to this clinic for a bilateral alarplasty. I am beyond thrilled with this vet:) The location itself is very clean, stylish, and comfortable. The staff is very welcoming, and the vet I saw (Dr.Buchholtz) was absolutely amazing! She was so knowledgeable, so friendly, and took the time to explain the procedure to me in great detail. The appointment was not rushed and I was able to ask all the questions I had. I was able to get a procedure for my cat scheduled within a week of the first exam. Everything went so smoothly and right away I saw great improvement in my cat. They also give your kitty a free toy after the appointment which is a sweet thing to do. I only wish this location wasn’t so far away from me because I would love to make it my general vet location. This is by far the best vet I’ve been to:) I highly recommend coming here for your cat’s needs. They’ll take care of you! Thank you so much:)

Excellent cat only veterinarian office. I take all 4 of my kitties to The Cat Doctor for their annual check up and vaccinations. I'm very happy with their availability and reasonable prices. The staff are all so kind, professional, and engaged during appointments. I also appreciate this vet office does not try to up sell me with unnecessary treatments, gadgets, or woo. Everyone here loves cats and strives to make the best treatment and care recommendations for both the physical and mental health of a cat. I haven't used the boarding services, but if I do I'll be sure to update my review with additional details.

I've never had a vet experience like this before. I've never had the techs and doctors sit down for upwards of 90 minutes to ask me about my cats' history, his quirks, our lifestyle, everything I've tried already to help the behaviors I'm concerned about. I've never had a vet seem to care so much about my own cat.. to tread lightly and exam him at his own pace, to keep him feeling comfortable and safe, to pay such attention to detail to his body language and demeanor, to even KNOW what to look for in his body language and demeanor! It was a completely unique, and honestly quite touching experience for us! Our other vet was great about hearing my concerns, and running all of the medical tests we could think of. But Dr. Buchholtz and Monica made it their mission to look deeper, ask detailed questions about his upbringing and what a day in the life is like and educated us on how that could be affecting his mind. It was like feline Sherlock and Watson holding a magnifying glass to his life to crack the case haha! For the first time in a long time I feel heard about my cat's quality of life and lack of self confidence, and have hope that we can help him slowly remember what it's like to be happy and carefree again! Their website does not lie, these people absolutely speak cat, and want to see your cat thrive like it's their own.

I’m so glad I found this veterinarian! So kind, patient and they only see cats! Very knowledgeable! My boy appreciates a cats only office! When you walk in, it’s peaceful and calming. We give it two paws up and kitty kisses all around!

Wow, I'm so impressed! The staff was wonderful. The doctor was fantastic. My cat was so calm with no dogs around. Completely worth the drive from Erie.
