How to Save Money at Penryn Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We love Penryn Pet hospital but please get more help answering your phones. I tried 4 different times today (all throughout the day) and when they do answer they immediately ask if I have a pet emergency; I get that. I say no, and then they say they will put me on a brief hold. OK, fine. Today I was on hold for 10 minutes, 8 minutes, 7 minutes before I just hung up and just tried to call now at 5pm and put on hold again. Please just take take my number and call me back....I am merely inquiring about neutering for my cat but this is ridiculous. More help is needed up front. Again, we are happy with this new clinic and are good customers at the equine clinic but frustrated that we cannot reach anyone with ridiculous wait times for a simple question. I understand emergencies but just tell me to call back or take my number and return my call.

We recently found our new favorite vet clinic—Penryn Pet Hospital—and we couldn’t be happier with the care our dogs received! We have two very large Great Pyrenees, and finding a clinic that can comfortably accommodate them isn’t always easy. Our visit was for dew claw trims and to check on our female’s ACL issue after noticing she was lame, and the team at Penryn Pet Hospital was fantastic—compassionate, knowledgeable, and incredibly patient with our big floofs. One of the standout features of this clinic is the spacious atrium, which is perfect if you need some extra room to keep your intimidating beasties separate from the little guys. The facility itself is clean, modern, and even comes with a fancy coffee shop—a definite bonus! Plus, it’s super easy to access from Highway 80, making it a convenient stop for anyone in the area. Another major plus? It’s owned by Loomis Basin Equine Hospital—a place we’re pretty sure we’ve helped pay the mortgage on over the years. 🤣 Given their reputation for top-tier equine care, it’s no surprise that Penryn Pet Hospital delivers the same level of excellent service for pets of all sizes. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a vet that truly understands and accommodates large dogs!

This review is NOT due to animal care, it is due to the fact that I was at the office on 9/24/25 and the receptionist was there all by herself, she was running around trying to please everyone, she was very kind, but it was too much. I called the office today, 9/29 and was on hold for 20 minutes, hung up to call back to say did you forget me, and was on hold for another 9. When I finally spoke to someone, she was very apologetic and again stated she is there all by herself. This is a growing business, do you think your customers have 30 minutes to wait on hold & how unfair to put your staff in this situation. The staff is very kind & helpful, the vets are great, the building is great, they need to hire more people to answer phones and take customers in and out. I have 4 dogs, for $88 an office visit & the highest prices I've seen for services, I expect better!

I had my 7 year old with the same vet since he was a puppy. The vet was under new ownership and I just felt the care wasn’t as good anymore. We moved to Newcastle and decided to move to this vet and give them a Chance. My dog had his first appt there today and I am so impressed by the care he received! Everyone was so kind not only to me, but also my dog. Gave him lots of love and pets while he was a little stand offish, made him way more comfortable! Extremely informative, took their time with the appointment, and were very reasonably priced. They treated my dog with love and care and it really meant a lot to me. Thank you for taking care of my baby!

The office staff was AMAZING and so were the vet techs. Unfortunately the doctor was somewhat detached and I didn’t feel like he was looking at my dog very close-
