How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My cat’s skin issue was misdiagnosed/mistreated by 2 veterinarians at this location. The 1st visit, I was told it was some type of infection. They gave my cat an antibiotic injection, and told me to use 2 topical medications to treat it. My cat’s wound started spreading rapidly once I started treating it. I took my cat back to Banfield, this time with a different veterinarian. They told me that he should be tested for ringworm. I asked if ringworm is the only other possibility it could be and was told yes. He was tested and I was told to keep using only 1 of the medications until we get results back, a week later. The wound continued to look worse and I had called to check on the results on the 6th day because I was starting to get really worried. I was told the results were negative, but to wait for the doctor to call me. I am still waiting for a call 2 days later. Thankfully, I decided to not wait for the doctor’s call and instead took him for a 2nd opinion on that day, and I am so glad I did. This new vet looked at my cat, and said it is not an infection, it is dermatitis. They did wound care (which Banfield did not offer to do) and sent me home with 1 medication that has significantly healed his skin in just 2 days. This experience brought me much unnecessary worry. After seeing how the new vet handled this issue, I am extremely dissatisfied and untrusting of Banfield. I cannot help but feel like I was milked for money OR the vets at this location are unknowledgeable. Please see the pictures. The first one is the day I took him to Banfield for the first time, the 2nd one is the day I took him for a second opinion, and the last one is how it looks now, 2 days after the 2nd opinion.

There so very good with my Lucky, I rescued her from a wonderful man who saved her off the streets of Los Angeles, he realized he couldn't keep her cause he already had cats and a backyard construction, I went and picked her up and I still stay in touch with the gentleman. Banfield took care of her and continues too. There so good and nice to her. Thank you for being so good to all animals and especially mine.

Staff is nice but actual customer service is lacking. Appts are pointless (so keep your day open) as they will have your pet for hours for simple visits. I have to call for updates because I won't receive any. Afterwards it is very difficult to speak to the actual vet.

Best experience we could ask for considering we were taking our cat for what we believed was an emergency. All of the staff made us feel very comfortable leaving our cat in their hands for treatment. They told us to be there right before closing, but stayed open later because they were trying their best to get a urine sample from our cat.(she has a shy bladder) Not once did we feel like we were being rushed or any kind of inconvenience to them. Amazing customer service as well as excellent care for our cat. This will be the only place we take our animals for care.

I made an appointment for in office visit for one vaccination. When I arrived, there had been an emergency surgery (which I completely understand) and the tech was out to lunch so there was no one to do my appointment. A phone call to say they were behind and couldn't keep the appointment was all that was required but didn't happen.
