How to Save Money at Kern Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog has seen this vet only but I am kinda not sure how I feel about vets anymor.. but I can't put in words how wonderful this vet is , I have taken my animals to them since they were little and now my dog was 14 and she had cancer mass that caused her pain she was to old to remove it and I could not afford the surgery. The shot cost 178 and they asked what I wanted to do cremate her or take her home to bury her . The cost for cremation was over 200 and I told them I couldn't do that and they came back in and said the donations account would cover the cost of cremation and what a god send that was ..I did know what to expect I was just thinking it would be a cardboard box but it was a beautiful carved wooden box with her name tag in brass and a ceramic paw print , and a pamfler on greaving all came in a blue velvet bag ..before I got the ashes the vet sent me a card with everyone's signature inside with sympathys . I was very touched by the vets actions of making this a much easier to go through. Thanks to these people at this vet for their compassion and true caring about people's and their pets . That's what makes them above all the rest .. it makes me feel there are still good people in this world still.. thank you to the vet and everyone there for making they really do make a difference.

We moved here about a year ago and have brought many of our animals here within the year. This is the most pleasant place to bring your beloved fur babies. The staff are so friendly , and the vet goes above and beyond to care for animals. You can truly tell they all genuinely love the animals they help. By far the best most accommodating veterinary office that we have been to.

I’ve been bringing my animal family members here for 20 years. KVH is amazing, and they go above and beyond for a small veterinary hospital in an economically depressed area with limited resources. They genuinely care about the welfare of the animals they treat, and our community is fortunate to have such a knowledgeable and caring doctor and staff.

I love this place. The KVH on Lake Isabella, right next to the gun store is great. The new facility is much bigger than the old place. They even have a separate space in the waiting room just for cats. The entire staff is awesome. They definitely make your pet feel as comfortable as possible. They are treated with love and care every single time I visit. Doctor Heather Is wonderful. She answers all of your questions and doesn’t make you feel she is too busy. I definitely recommend this place.

Terrible experience. Huge double standard. They will charge you for cancelling an appointment without 24 hours notice but will call you 5 hours before your appointment and cancel on you then schedule you out another 3 weeks. Took the day off work to take care of my pet then got pushed aside without reasonable notice and reasonable rescheduling. Do not recommend. Go to kernville.
