How to Save Money at Huntington Beach Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr.Lewis is the best! He has been caring for my Vizsla for the past 7+ years…since he was a young pup (added then and now pics 😬). He has seen us through all….allergies, ear infections (not uncommon for breed), lipomas, illness and overall well-being. I highly recommend him if you want a caring vet/staff, thoughtful diagnosis and explanation (and you can ask all the questions needed until YOU understand it) and follow up care. Their prices are in line with other area vets (I’ve checked) and they don’t try and upsell you or add on anything you don’t need. I definitely recommend Dr.Lewis and HB Pet Hospital!

Since moving to HB I was worried about getting my cat the best care, but the staff was so helpful on the phone and easy to talk to! Made my appointment, and everyone was so warm and welcoming. My cat Loki was at ease and I couldn't have asked for a better experience!

They are expensive, and prices went up after the office remodel. Huntington Beach Pet Hospital consistently upsells services, so I've learned to carefully review every treatment plan and ask lots of questions. Unfortunately, before the busy holidays, my guard slipped. I went in simply to refill a prescription for our dog, who had no symptoms of illness. Before I realized it, I had agreed to $500 in testing!! I fell for their scare tactic: suggesting that something unrelated but serious might be wrong to get me to agree to additional tests. Ugh! Clear communication and informed test consent were missing. And that's disappointing Time to find a new vet!

I had a 9:40 AM appointment with Dr. Lewis. I checked in on time and was brought into a room quickly. A staff member named Monse came in first, asked general questions about my pet (Homie), and gave me a few minutes to speak before leaving. When Dr. Lewis came in, the experience changed. The room was very small (about 7x7), and throughout the visit he paced back and forth almost the entire time, which made the interaction feel chaotic and difficult to follow. He also spoke rapidly and continuously without giving me much opportunity to explain my concerns or ask questions. The exam itself felt rushed. He briefly checked Homie and mentioned a possible heart murmur, but the explanation was fast and not easy to follow. After mentioning this, the conversation briefly shifted into a comparison of dog and cat hearts. Instead of helping clarify my cat’s condition, it felt irrelevant and didn’t contribute useful information to the visit. Before I could ask questions, he was already moving on to recommending additional tests, including a urine test and other procedures, without clearly explaining why those were prioritized over something like bloodwork, which I expected. The entire interaction with the doctor lasted only 5-10 minutes, and he left without asking if I had any questions. Afterward, Monse returned with an estimate of around $600 for additional testing (including an ultrasound), plus about $350 for bloodwork. One thing that stood out when reviewing the estimate was that it included a $72 physical exam fee, even though I had already paid that amount prior to the visit (documentation attached). There was no indication on the written estimate that the fee had already been paid, would be credited, or applied toward the total. I was later told it would be subtracted if I moved forward with their plan, but that was not reflected anywhere on the document. As presented, it appeared as an additional charge, which I found confusing and concerning from a transparency standpoint. At that point, I declined further services because I didn’t feel properly heard or informed. Between the rushed visit, lack of communication, and the questionable estimate, I wasn’t comfortable moving forward. For a $72 exam fee, this felt like very little value for the level of care and communication provided..

I’ve been coming to HB Pet Hospital since my dog was 3mo old, she is 7 now. We have always had great service and I trust the entire team with the health of my dog. Plus my dog loves going to the vet. She absolutely loses it when she figures out we are going to the vet.
