How to Save Money at Cottonwood Small Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had a very upsetting experience here and would not recommend this clinic to anyone. I brought my sick cat in and clearly explained all of her symptoms. Instead of listening carefully, they immediately assumed it was parvo and only did a swab test from the car. After the results came back negative, I again explained what had been going on — she was extremely lethargic, wobbly, screaming in pain randomly, no moving eyes, no engaging behavior and her nails were crumbling. Despite this, the vet gave her a Convenia injection, which is typically used for skin infections, even though she had no open wounds or visible skin condition. I felt like my concerns were not taken seriously and that proper diagnostics were not done. None of my simple questions were answered during the exam, told me it was most likely a stomach bug and would pass. After taking my cat here, she passed away the very next day her only being 6 months. It was heartbreaking, and I can’t help but feel that more could have been done to actually figure out what was wrong. I will never be coming back here and will never recommend this clinic to anyone. My experience was devastating and I felt like my pet did not receive the care she deserved.

My previous vet backed out of doing my Fluffy Frenchy's c-section. Which, left me scrambling when she went into labor before I was able to get her into the next arranged vet. Cottonwood was the only vet I could find from Redding to Sacramento, that was willing to do her c-section. It was an emergency for us because it was highly unlikley that she would have delivered at home, on her own. Our Veterinarian and her team were fantastic. Extremely knowledgeable and completely up front about everything. Our Bailey is doing so well, as well as her four puppies! My husband and I are going to be switching our entire pack to Cottonwood. It is worth the drive just for their knowledge, the appreciation they have for animals, and the fact that they treat you with respect and honesty. Thank you Cottonwood team for everything you did for us, the puppies, and our Bailey!

This place is absolutely terrible. I took a cat here back in December to get fixed. When she came home she got a respiratory infection from there office. They would not receive me medicine for it. Luckily our large animal vet prescribed us some! The receptionist was very RUDE and hung up on me. I called back to let her know it was rude. When I tried to take her in on another service. They refused to see me because of that incident. These people do not care about your animals and only care about the money. Do yourself a favor and go to VCA gateway on Anderson! They are the best and very considerate! They got me in fast.

The waitlist idea works great. Where we lived before we would have to pay an emergency fee to be seen, and it took weeks or longer to get an appointment. The techs and two vets we have seen are kind and helpful. Very reasonably priced

I’d rather have an appointment, but if you have no plans for the day, their waitlist system works great. And once called in the staff was very efficient. The vet made sure to give me the time I needed and explained all questions thoroughly. Highly recommend. 😊
