How to Save Money at Veg

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

VEG is our go-to emergency hospital for our bunnies. We have had to make several trips now and every time we are treated with the best of care. They are very professional, thorough, and compassionate. Our favorite vet nurse is Dayna. She has a heart of gold and is great with our bunnies. I call her the bunny whisperer! Thank you Dayna & VEG for always taking great care of our buns! ❤️

In my opinion, 1 star is still too high a rating. We took our cat here recently because we thought she had ingested pollen from a lily, which we learned is incredibly toxic to cats. I called the Anaheim Hills office before arriving to confirm if we needed to bring her in immediately, which they urged us to do, so we rushed her to the emergency vet and sought help. Within 20 minutes of our cat possibly ingesting lily pollen, we were at the emergency vet. Upon arriving, we were told to call poison control to get their recommendation on treatment before getting any kind of help from the emergency vet team in the office. We told them we would like them to treat our cat instead of calling. Then we were put into a room and waited for about an hour and a half before our cat was treated. Although the wait time was normal, as there were a few other animals in the office, the vet only saw our cat for a total of 10-15 minutes. The rest of the time, he was blowing up gloves to make balloon animals, enjoying his dinner at his desk, and treating other patients briefly. We were quoted nearly six-thousand dollars for three days of hospitalization, blood work, a "therapeutic" bath, and urine testing to confirm if our cat had actually ingested any pollen. When we opted for out-patient treatment, the price did drop to a little over a thousand dollars for treatment which included a "therapeutic" bath, urine testing, and blood work. The nurses then provided a bath, which was just wet wipes, fluids, anti-nausea medication, and pain medication. We asked if they were going to give her an actual bath as they recommended that to us, but they told us that they would need to fully sedate our cat to give her a bath. When taking her urine sample, the first nurse was able to get the needle in to her stomach for the sample, but it was not at the right spot. My husband was then asked to hold our cat still to assist with getting the urine sample, but ultimately the vet needed to come do it because the nurses were afraid they were going to harm our cat more in taking the sample themselves. They inserted an IV, pushed about three tubes of fluids into her back along with the pain and anti-nausea meds, then provided a cardboard box for us to take her home in. At no point was vomiting induced at the emergency vet and we took our cat home that night. Seeing as a bath was recommended, we gave her one as soon as we got home because they were unable to do it at the vet office. The next day, we took our cat to her primary vet who asked about prior treatment. She was shocked that the emergency vet did not induce vomiting or give our cat a proper bath. The vet then confirmed that any kind of symptoms of lily intoxication would take a few more days to show up in her blood and urine, so the three day quote for inpatient treatment we were given was unnecessary. Our cat is now being cared for by her primary vet. I later called to speak to someone to get an answer on why induced vomiting was not part of our cat's treatment, but was put on hold before the line disconnected. If you have no other options, please feel free to go here. I will not dissuade you from seeking treatment here. However, I feel it necessary to state that our experience was terrible and we found the staff unprofessional. There are multiple other 24hr emergency vets in the area. If the need for emergency treatment for our pets ever arises, this will not be one that we go to again.

I am so thankful to Doctor Yang and his team. Shannon, Stephanie, and Elle were all amazing. We took our sick Guinea pig who we were sure would not make it, and they helped her. It meant so much to us how much care they showed and how welcomed we felt. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and they began working with her. She is doing so much better now and gaining strength each day. Thank you so much!

While walking my pet to go to the bathroom, I noticed a concerning amount of blood coming from her genital region. I have a black pug that is prone to various infections and skin dermatitis. At five years old, she still had not a urinary tract infection but this seemed severe. I reside in an emergency shelter and do not have much financial support to bring my pet to a normal veterinarian. I called the VEG and explained the symptoms and my personal situation. The VEG said they would minimally be able to take a look without having me pay a cost. Even with just the minimum I felt a calming relief that I could bring my pet somewhere for care. After more than an hour at the emergency veterinarian, the doctor came to talk about Astarte, my twinkling Star. Astarte “Star” did have a severe bladder infection, and the best course of action was a pain and anti-inflammatory pill alongside a full course of antibiotic. The total bill was $481.94: including the $195 emergency visit, $115.70 ultrasound and both medicines. The VEG completely waived all costs for me in this particular situation. I am so grateful for their care and dedication to the community of pets and people. Regardless of the cost, they went above and beyond and did everything to make me comfortable during the day. This included a couple complimentary snacks and a beverage. Unexpectedly, I had been given a ride to the VEG by staff of my emergency shelter however, they were not able to bring me back home. My shelter staff didn’t inform me of that until they dropped me off and I was a bit shocked. After the appointment finished at VEG the doctor personally covered my Uber trip back home. I am grateful and thankful for such an unsolicited act generosity. I was otherwise going to walk 14 miles while carrying my puppy. I would have. I have carried more weight for a longer time. I would do anything for my Star. On this night, I felt lucky and even connected with a friend’s friend who drove the Uber home. My closer friend the next day told me their Uber friend shared a story about a woman and her pug at the VEG. My blessings find those who need them and help the VEG continue their devotion to everyone and everypet possible.
