How to Save Money at New River Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't say enough good things about New River Veterinary Hospital and the amazing staff who work there. Every time we come in for a well visit, they treat my dogs with such kindness, professionalism, and genuine care. Today was no exception—my pups were greeted with smiles, gentle hands, and lots of love. The team is always thorough, patient, and attentive, making sure my dogs are comfortable and healthy. It's clear they truly care about animals and take pride in what they do. I always leave feeling confident that my dogs are in the best hands possible. Thank you for consistently going above and beyond.

I am so upset with this vet. I took my dog in for ear infection and exam. Walked out of there paying 350.00. They gave me some cream and cleaner and said I could put it on outside ear too. I called 2 days later to confirm which medicine I was supposed to put on the outside and they did not know what I was talking about. I reminded them about the sores on the outside of the ear and they again said it was not noted. There is NO way you could do an exam of the ears and not feel the bumps all over on the outside of the ear too. I asked to come in for a 2nd opinion with Dr Sarah. I came in and they finally gave me an antibiotic and itch meds... her ear was really bad. They charged me another office visit and I only had 100.00 more (now $450 total) and the bill was $180. I told them I only had 100 but could pay the rest in a day or two. They immediately asked me TO GIVE BACK THE MEDICINE that she needed badly, since I did not have the whole 180.00. I told them that I would not even be here today if they would have properly examined my dog 3 days ago. I Could not believe my ears. I gave them 450.00 in 3 days and they took back her medicine and sent me and my very sick dog on our way. They should not be in business! That is not how you care for sick animals. My 100 would have covered the meds and some other charges. They did not use to be this way. They are now just about the money, not doing their best job. I am appalled at this staff and will never go back! Oh. ...when I told them they should waive the 2nd exam fee I was told I'm not welcome back...

The best vet in the North Valley! We've been bringing our dogs here for nearly 10 years. Dr. Sarah and Dr. Jordy are compassionate and caring... always giving us the time and guidance to keep our "furry children" happy and healthy. Their staff is amazing as well! Long story short, they are our go to vet for all of our dogs over the years.

The staff are amazing. Last month I had to put my dog Cooper down and they have an amazing inviting room set up. The experience was like being at home and although it was hard on my boys and me loosing Cooper, we had privacy and each step the staff was there.

I recently had to put my beautiful himalayan cat to sleep and I was devastated. I've never had to do that before. I was not a current "patient" with NR Vet, but the wonderful staff there worked with me to schedule in home euthanasia. I could barely hold it together every time I spoke to them, but everyone was so compassionate through the whole process. I really didn't expect the level of care and outcome I received, but my baby is back home with me now forever. It's hard to believe 13 1/2 years of love is in this small box, but I will cherish it forever.
