How to Save Money at Veterinary Specialty Center of Seattle

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Keep your pets away from this place!!! The staff are rude and b****s especially this blue haired girl. Came in with my cat who had accidentally gotten dog flea treatment 24 hours prior. They took him right away and told me to call poison control as I was on the phone with them they took me to a back room and the lady in the phone started with “unfortunately…” and started talking about seizures which my childhood dog gets regularly which was terrifying to hear that my cat could experience that. The vet came in and told me that he’s better and that he doesn’t need to stay overnight. But then they told me that poison control had recommended keeping him overnight. The cost for overnight care is ridiculous jus the medicine was a 1,000 dollars. I called poison control back and they said that the vet said he was showing signs of tremors which he didn’t have prior to coming to this awful place then poison control said to just follow what the clinic says even though the clinic was saying they were following poison control recommendation. I then started questioning the girl who was wanting us to sign a paper to agree to the payment and I then asked for the second time to see him before signing any papers. They took me to him and he was freaking out because they had put a cone on him which their excuse was that he was hurting his ears although he wasn’t scratching his ears he was scratching his neck which the cone didn’t help with. He seemed the same as 3 hours before when we brought him in so I asked what they had given him and after a long discussion I came to the conclusion that nothing had been given. It was ridiculous WHY WERE WE EVEN THERE. I was so frustrated that I had left my cat with these horrible people to be even more traumatized by the pain. I asked why they didn’t give him anything and they said it’s because the paper hadn’t been signed. I then told them to scratch the overnight paper and give him medicine which the blue haired girl said she wouldn’t be another paper if we take him home. Later on it was emailed instead staff was probably too lazy to do it again and just mad that we weren’t willing to give in on their scam. This rude Hispanic woman came over to where my cat was and I asked did there is any way to give him something for the itching since he looked so uncomfortable and she just said it would take a long time I then said that my cat hasn’t slept in a whole day. I had been petting him until he finally was able to rest and then the Hispanic woman came over and told me I had to leave because Night Shift was coming and I said I’m taking him with me. She then asked if I have a cage for him which I did have but they took it. When I had realized they actually had it I told her “oh you have it” and she just told me to not raise my voice at her which I had definitely not done. The vet then gave us the medicine and it he cost was only in the 3 digits much better that 4 digits ridiculous price. I gave my cat the medicine when I got home and he slept all night in my cozy room next to me instead of a cold AND LOUD.

I cannot say enough great things about this clinic. I had a pet emergency, which of course happened on a Holiday, and was frantically calling around to see who was open and they were very honest on their wait times. Both my pets had to be submitted and even though it was a long evening, they kept me updated all throughout the process. I felt very comfortable and the front desk staff was amazing. Sorry I didn't get your names, but you all were very personable and calm with other patients. Dr. Aguilar and Dr. Duval were top notch on updates with my dog "Chevy" who unfortunately had to stay overnight a couple of evenings. (Sorry for his high energy and big appetite.) I would get daily phone calls on his status which made me feel more and more at ease. So, thank you again to you and your incredible staff. You will be highly recommended.

I just got home with my beloved childhood pet that had to be euthanized today. It was the first time I’ve ever gone through this so I was new to the process. Despite me being a broken mess and asking for truth and honesty, while the vet did explain the steps, he didn’t tell me that sedation is used until the animal is totally asleep to ensure a peaceful death. Instead, he quickly transferred the second vial, prior to my pet dying. My cat was still awake, licking my hand, when this monster stopped his heart. So now I have to live with the question of whether he suffered or knew his mom of 14 years put him down. He’s a psychopath and plays on people’s emotions, sitting on the floor and getting down on your level to mirror kindness when the truth is, he’d just as well stop an animals heart while they’re still awake. I also noted some other red flags in the responses he’d give. I said I wouldn’t leave my best friend of 14 years alone because I felt he was actively dying so surgery and hours of tests wasn’t an option. He was like, “oh well, we’ll be with him!” *smiles kindly* Knowing full well that strangers in a back room full of barking dogs and screaming cats is not what my dying cat would want. The fact that the thought even crossed his mind that I’d allow them to put him down without me present in the back proves how Sick this man is. I even said multiple times that I would not leave his side until the very end. I didn’t trust this man so much that I went home and took out my own stethoscope to make sure that his heartbeat was Gone. This vet charged me $550 to put my pet down. The girl at reception was a heartless b, too. Came in at the worst time to ask to charge the remaining $320 while I waited for my cat to get his final IV. At least the vet was able to fake his sympathy while he quickly got the euthanasia over with. Keep your pets away from here.

Our sweet 3 year old pug recently suffered from a high velocity disc herniation and was completely unable to use his back left leg. VSC was able to not only get us in to see a neurologist, but also got us in for an MRI the same day. Dr. Brook was so wonderful, calling me with every update she had until we were waiting to see neurology and walking me through everything. Dr. Spoor from neurology was so amazing, answering all of our questions and breaking down his diagnosis so we could understand what to expect. I can’t speak highly enough of their bedside manner - our pug is now on his way to recovery and we appreciate all of the great care 💜
