How to Save Money at Philadelphia Animal Specialty & Emergency (PASE)

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my Pomeranian Justin for an emergency surgery and I am so impressed with how kind, caring, professional, and thorough all of the staff was. I am so thankful to have worked with Dr. Samuels and Kristin! They made my brother and I feel so comfortable. Jermaine went over all the discharge instructions and was so kind and thorough as well. I really appreciate everyone at PASE and how good they treated Justin during his stay there! They went above and beyond!

My toy poodle had a fracture in her hind leg and it needed to be splintered. My local vet recommended this facility so I drove up from Delaware. I went through the intake process and ultimately spoke to the doctor. She shared the costs and asked me if I could pay it. I thought of it as an odd question but she indicated that it was a standard procedure to inform the client of the costs involved. When the procedure was completed, the bill was more than $200 than what she quoted me even after the military discount! I asked for an explanation and was told some BS about she was only referring to her costs not the hospital. I felt totally blindsided! I didn't want to cause a scene so I got my pup and left.

From the minute we walked in the door, from reception to check out, we were treated with kindness and compassion. My poor baby was showing signs of pain and discomfort. She was having surgery the next day for a mass on her bladder. I thought she had a broken tooth, bleeding from her mouth, wouldn’t eat, and struggling to breathe. It wasn’t a tooth. Her lymph nodes had swollen and she was in pain. Struggling to breathe, tail between her legs, a pet parents worse nightmare: I was given many options but ultimately when asked “What would you do”, I knew from the doctor’s face, it was time 💔 The most incredibly painful decision of my life. Dr. Johnson was kind, soft spoken and gentle with my girl. They brought her in for the time i needed and let me lay with her and hold her until her last breath. The entire staff was so amazing. Even the beautiful lady who said, I gave you two containers of her hair , she has some light and some dark. My heart will forever be broken. I am so grateful my Diva Girl gave me a sign. She didn’t want surgery, she was tired and she was in pain. I would have never, ever made that decision without the knowledge and comfort of the amazing staff and Dr Johnson. It was the right one, I know that in my heart. I always imagined if I ever had to put her down, it would be in the comfort of her own home but I was at peace there and so was she . A beautiful send off and an amazing facility. THANK YOU, everyone at PASE. You made the worst day of my life a day I felt totally at peace knowing you were all so kind and compassionate. Words can never explain the eternal gratitude I will have for each and every one of you. Diva had and incredible life and her end was just as beautiful.

I rushed my cat here after he had been experiencing some odd symptoms last night, he couldn’t move and I noticed his stomach was pretty stiff. When I called PASE I was told there would be a 3 hour wait, however when so arrived the hospital was nearly empty and they took my cat immediately. After about 20 minutes someone came into the room and told me my cat had FLUTD, and this caused a urinary blockage. They then told me my only options were to pay for a $3500 procedure to fix the blockage, or euthanize him. I had asked if I could take him home to get a second opinion, or to have him seen by his vet, but they insisted he wouldn’t make it through the night and was in excruciating pain. They even went as far as to say he was being aggressive, and was no longer the cat I knew. I felt as though they were holding my cat hostage as they were very opposed to even letting me see him. Eventually I was able to see him, and he wasn’t at all aggressive. See the pictures I attached - this was him every time I went back to see him. They told me the $3500 procedure wouldn’t be a cure all, and that the chances of it happening again were very high. I decided to go through with euthanasia, but even that was made difficult by PASE. Prior to signing the papers for euthanasia, I had more questions to know whether I was really making the best choice. A woman named Mariam, Maria, or Marian (i can’t remember) came in and very condescendingly spoke to me about the care of my pet. She was terse, lacked empathy, and was incredibly impatient given the circumstances I was faced with. After I finally decided to euthanize him, and sobbed over him saying my goodbyes, the same vet tech came back in not 10 minutes later and told me they “I know this is a lot, but we need to get the ball rolling.” I feel as though I was not only pressured to euthanize my animal, but rushed to do so as well. On top of all of this, they didn’t even give me a copy of his paw print as they were “too busy.” The only person who showed any compassion really was Gianna at the front desk who apologized time and time again for the behavior of the rest of the staff. If you love your animal, do not bring it to PASE.

My dog ate an entire box of Raisin Bran late one Friday night. I called ahead to PASE and someone was ready for us as we walked in the door. Dr Halle Mitchell explained care options with consideration, and offered me the gold standard ($$$) and a less expensive alternative that still would meet standard of care. I really appreciated being informed of my options and the financial element of each without judgment. The team was excellent and efficient, and I was in and out in about an hour. We came back for follow up blood work and had a similar experience, quick and easy. The facility is brand new, the lobby is large, and I found street parking easily. The exam fee was typical to what I’ve paid at other ER clinics in the city, emergency care is pricey everywhere. P.s. Everyone should get pet insurance!
