How to Save Money at BluePearl Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my friends cat in yesterday and they were a big help. Waiting period was long I came at 745pm and saw doctor around 1230am and left at 130am. However doctor took nearly 30mins answering all the questions and examining my friends cat Sammy. Also today went in to pick Sammy after hospitalization overnight. Vet tech was super friendly, and answered all our questions. Highly recommend this place.

I have nothing but praise for the staff, nurses, techs, and doctors at BluePearl Forest Hills. After an ultrasound showed tumors on my cat’s liver, her regular vet told me to find a surgeon to remove them. After calling no less than 12 hospitals in the area, from central NJ to NYC (and being told I would have to wait at least a month to even have a consult) I was lucky enough to call BluePearl. They had immediate availability for further exams, and I was able to schedule surgery within a week. Dr Sullivan was amazing and reassuring, communicating with us every step of the way. Seeing how distressed we were, and given a quiet time in the office, the staff allowed us to stick around for hours while we awaited results. When they noticed I was cold, they even brought me a blanket! There was coffee and tea available too. When reading the negative reviews, I was surprised: our experience was nothing short of ideal, an incredible blessing and grace in a moment of utter turmoil. Was it expensive? Yes, vet care in general is expensive. That’s why you need pet insurance! If you can’t afford $30/month to protect your pet from inevitable illness or accidents, you should seriously reconsider if you should have a pet. We did not have an emergent situation on our hands, but pet owners should know that veterinary radiologists, surgeons, and oncologists are both busy and rare. Trust me, I called a dozen hospitals as proof of this! BluePearl doesn’t necessarily have ALL kinds of emergency care ALL the time. Consider whether you have an urgent matter or serious emergency on your hands, then call ahead and ask for advice! Finally, we never had to endure a long wait except once when we were waiting for our cat to be released, and that was because doctor and staff were focused on triage and treatment of a very sick pet and her distressed parent. I don’t know about you, but if I had to say goodbye to my pet, I would be eternally grateful to have that attention paid to me in such a terrible moment. One of the staff even saw how upset this other pet parent was and kindly offered to park her car so she could get to her little one in time to say goodbye. I genuinely don’t know what else you could realistically want for your pet. Long story short: - Dr Sullivan is a rockstar. Knowledgeable, skilled, dedicated, and kind. - The entire staff are friendly and incredibly hospitable, and the nurses are so dang smart too. - If you need a specialist, they may not be available at all times, so call ahead and ask for their suggestion. - ALL veterinary care is expensive. Get pet insurance and you won’t have to choose between your wallet and your best friend.

Brought my Stella ( coonhound mix ) Friday afternoon for a serious GI inflammation episode that we just couldn’t get under control on our own. We needed to admit her . They were very accommodating. Provided updates for her at 8 pm and 11am the following day. She had a serious GI bleed. They kept her on IV meds till we picked her up. Provided 3 cans of food that she liked and was easy on her stomach. A little pricey but if you have a pup you should have pet insurance. It’s worth every penny having 10+ vets watching a part of your family over night for treatment. If we ever need anything again we know where to go . We thank the team there for their work.

***TO ANYONE READING THIS: DO NOT VISIT UNLESS YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY PRESSURED!!!!*** I recently took my beloved cat to this veterinary clinic, and the experience left much to be desired. It was an UTTERLY HORRID visit, so I feel compelled to share my unfortunate experience. From the moment we walked through the door, it was evident that the clinic lacked any sense of cleanliness and order. We spent over an hour waiting for the doctors to show up (something other reviewers also mentioned), and when they finally did, there was no action taken to help with the situation. The only positive thing that I could've said in that time was on the kindness of the staff, yet I instantly took that thought back. THE DOCTORS AND STAFF HERE ONLY WANT MONEY. DO NOT FALL FOR THEIR SCAMS. This place is only taking advantage of the love you have for your pets and forcing you to pay outrageous amounts with little to no results (as the other commenters have ALSO mentioned). The second we denied their offer to spend more money, their attitudes immediately turned dismissive and rude. All this is not even scraping the surface of the situation here. Once they took my cat in we waited for another tedious period of time before they finally came out THROWING THE CAGE AT US. They suggested again that we pay another couple thousand and let the cat stay overnight, but seeing the situation then and the comments here now, we're glad we didn't make that decision. Not only did my cat come out hissing (which she never does), she was turned on her back and unable to move. We don't know what the doctors did to her here, but normally she is very obedient and never makes a peep when encountered with the better vets that we have met with. Furthermore, it is impossible to determine whether they actually administered the medicine we paid for. The cat's condition seems to not be improving, yet we spent nearly 700 dollars on them. So once again, DO NOT FALL FOR THEIR SCAMS. It is only most reasonable to assume that the handling and examinations were rough, causing my cat to become agitated and scared. Evidently, my cat's well-being and comfort were not a priority during the visit. The vet seemed more interested in getting through appointments quickly for the money than providing compassionate care. In addition to the poor treatment of my cat, the overall cleanliness of the place was questionable. The clinic had an unpleasant odor that clung to us at home. Overall, I was deeply disappointed with this vet visit. My cat deserves better care and attention, especially during stressful medical visits. I would strongly advise pet owners to seek out a more cat-friendly and compassionate veterinary clinic where their pets' well-being is genuinely prioritized. Oh, and one last thing. There has been someone in charge of responding to the reviews here apparently, and I just want to warn anyone reading not to believe any of the responses they send to low-star reviews! They are repeating the same mantras over and over in the comments, and all of them are meaningless. They are lies. They want to deceive you. Please, for the well-being of your pet and you, do not visit this pet hospital.

My dog was throwing up every hour, and of course it had to be during the weekends when none of the local vets were open. I hesitated and waited a whole night before bringing her in given all the negative reviews and it is those same reviews that influenced others to tell me not to bring my dog here and to wait until so and so places open up again or to trek out to unknown places in Long Island to go to so and so vet. I took a chance and brought my dog in anyway and thought my experience with Blue Pearl was fine. They did a thorough examination with a full report to provide to my primary vet. I kick myself for allowing the negative reviews to influence my decision to not take her in sooner. Yes, it’s expensive but that’s the price you pay for the convenience and pays for the facility to keep its lights on 24/7. That’s why you should get pet insurance as well. Sometimes local/available is better than waiting for the best of the best to open their doors again.
