How to Save Money at City Animal Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can’t say enough good things about City Animal Vet. Dr. Cheung is truly one of a kind—so kind, deeply knowledgeable, and incredibly detail-oriented. You can tell she really loves what she does, and loves animals. I have two senior Shetland Sheepdogs—Rocky and Rosko—who both need a lot of care at this stage of their lives. Rocky recently had a dental procedure and needed a few teeth removed. I was anxious about it, but Dr. Cheung walked me through everything, and her care was so thorough. Rocky healed up well. Rosko has arthritis, and we started acupuncture treatments with Dr. Cheung. The difference has been unbelievable. He’s got this spark back—he actually wants to play again and will pick up his toy and bring it over for me to throw. He hadn’t done that in a long time. I recommend Dr. Cheung and her wonderful team without any reservations. Thank you for getting Rosko excited and able to play again!

While not all places exams guinea pig, City Animal Veterinary does and I was so happy with the process. The place is clean and welcoming. This is my guinea pig's first visit to the vet and I was super anxious. However, Dr. Cheung is confident, friendly and knowledgeable. She also gave many great advice to this new guinea pig owner. My guinea pig was a bit fussy, but everyone there were top notch. One of the staff even showed me the proper technique to clip his nails. Making an appointment over the phone was also simple as a new patient. The clinic is opened 7 days a week! The F and G trains are close-by. We got lucky and found street parking after circling around twice.

Dr. Cheung is a TRUE angel! We have an adopted bunny who suddenly began showing signs of severe lethargy and lowered heart rate. We rushed him to the only vet that was open and all the staff were incredibly comforting and helpful. Our sweet rabbit is back to his mischievous self thanks to their team! They answered all our questions with kindness and sent us home equipped with supplies. We need look no further for our dream vet.

After extensive research and referrals, I am deeply grateful to have found Dr. Cheung, with whom my dog has been seeing for pain management and acupuncture sessions to treat her arthritis. Typically very anxious at vet visits, she is happy and relaxed when she comes to the center for sessions. My dog came in as a new patient with a very lengthy medical history, and Dr. Cheung took the time in advance to thoroughly read through all her records, connecting the dots between symptoms, and continues to give us advice that thoughtfully considers the big picture. Not only is she an incredible wealth of knowledge, but it’s obvious that she has genuine compassion and concern for the well-being of our dog. Because of this, we have deep trust in her and her advice. At no point do we feel rushed during our visits—it feels like she makes time for each of her patients, and every concern we raise is met with care. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Cheung and City Animal Veterinary Center. I highly recommend to anyone looking for high quality care for their animals.

I will be forever grateful to Dr Cheung and her wonderful team for helping me through my cats cancer diagnosis and eventual transition over the rainbow bridge. They treated her with so much love even when she wasn’t so kind to them.
