How to Save Money at BluePearl Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I will be forever grateful to Blue Pearl and Dr. Guzman for successfully diagnosing my cat with heart disease. I had been to my regular vet twice already in the past month when he showed signs of illness. I expected a blockage, since I suspected he had not peed in 24 hours. The front desk staff brought him upstairs immediately and treated his case as an emergency. Luckily, there was no blockage, but Dr. Guzman noticed that he had a heart issue. I elected not to do diagnostic tests at Blue Pearl because it was no longer an emergency, and the projected bill was so gosh-darn expensive. I appreciated their transparency. At the end of the day, what matters most to me is that a vet can treat my animal companions correctly, and in this case, Blue Pearl went above and beyond.

In the same way you would want your doctor to have all the resources to properly take care of you, the staff give the same professionalism to your fur friend. Fostering a Siberian husky with a lot of trauma was no walk in the park, it was a sprint into a car. I had never experienced a care system that was so reassuring and helpful even when the procedure came a unforeseen time. This big pup has gone through the wringer yet Dr. Williams and staff calmly addressed the foster dog with such finesse when I was worried how it would react, not even being sure if it’s ever been to a doctor before. Thankful to BluePearl 3rd Ave, Thor is doing remarkably well and is in great hands with his new siblings and forever home.

Bought my cat in today and EVERYONE here was so kind and friendly (even over the phone). I won’t know if their treatment plan actually works until some weeks from now but it was certainly a pleasant experience. And the office is every inclusive. The waiting are was filled with Pride and Juneteenth decorations.

My dog, Bagel, was diagnosed with IMHA at another ER and needed a blood transfusion. We were recommended to go to Blue Pearl at 3rd Ave in Brooklyn as they had specialists here to assist with Bagel's condition. Upon arrival, the staff at the front desk was already expecting us and knew who we were once I mentioned Bagel's name. Within 10 minutes, Bagel was escorted up to their examination rooms for diagnostics. Bagel was hospitalized for 5 days with multiple blood transfusions. It was an extremely stressful and sleep depriving situation, but the staff at BluePearl made the experience more tolerable with their professionalism and responsiveness. We probably called for updates at least 3 times a day and was met with extreme professionalism each time. Staff was courteous and sympathetic - recognizing our voice and was extremely responsive to follow ups. We visited Bagel every day and never did we have a bad experience with the staff. Bagel was discharged after 5 days and they were thorough with at home care instructions. I had trouble the first night, administering medicine and had to call BluePearl for assistance. The doctor at that time was extremely helpful and helped me prioritize which meds we had to get into her if we had a limited window of success. She was extremely patient and also provided tips on how to get Bagel to take the pills. I do not remember her name, but I am hoping she will get the recognition for her assistance even though she was not Bagel’s primary doctor. She was also the doctor on duty, the first night, we visited Bagel. Now onto the staff that I did meet who I am extremely grateful for. Dr. Campbell was Bagel’s primary doctor and he was extremely knowledgeable in his field; providing educational and crucial information to me that helped us make our decisions every step of the way. Dr. Kyle Krellwitz was another staff member that helped us immensely during this stressful period – he was thorough on the phone and was extremely patient in person. He gave us all the time we needed during visiting hours and answered any questions we had while showing sympathy to our situation. I have not met Dr. Mallika Prabhakar, but I know she was very much involved with Bagel’s case – unfortunately, the times we visited, she was not on duty, but I want her to know that her assistance and care is much appreciated. There is one particular staff member that I want to make sure gets recognition is Kate from internal medicine…She is a gem and very responsive. She provided lots of tips and also sent follow up emails asking about Bagel’s recovery at home – this made the whole experience extremely personable. She was also the one we spoke with at discharge and provided lots of tips and advice. There was another lady with her at discharge who I do not know her name, but I know she also took care of Bagel during her hospitalization and wanted to extend my appreciation for her as well. Everyone including the reception has been exceptional. I do not know what Bagel’s future holds and I know there will be a long tough road ahead of us with this horrible autoimmune disease, but one thing I do know is that BluePearl’s staff played a huge role in helping Bagel get to the point of discharge. Many times, people only leave reviews due to bad/unfortunate experiences as that is all they would focus on in the moment; but rarely do people leave reviews for good experiences as they just go about their day after the ordeal, so I wanted to make sure that BluePearl gets their recognition for their love of pets and care for animals.

I’m here today for my cat, Oliver, and have been here several times for my two dogs. Blue Pearl is consistently top notch! Every single employee from the front desk to the doctors and everyone in between are knowledgeable, professional, considerate, compassionate and just really sweet! They make these not so fun times that much easier. I can’t say enough good things about them.
