How to Save Money at Heron's Crossing

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Lauren Cassady was patient, compassionate, and tender with the passing of our sweet girl. Thank you! These simple words feel inadequate to express our profound gratitude in helping our household feel at peace with our decision to allow our pup to pass into the beyond with grace in the same way she lived in life. Dr. Lauren stepped through our doorway and into our lives at a difficult time as we had been watching our sweet dog suffer for several weeks following a series of stokes and our household was experiencing the complex emotions of grief. She sat with us on the floor as we witnessed the awe, wonder, and curiosity not only unique in birth but also in death and I now feel like Heron's Crossing is part of our family.

From the first time I reached out to Herons Crossing via email - to the inevitable passing of our sweet girl, everyone I encountered and spoke to (and emailed with) we’re so comforting, so nice, and made this painful process easy. We chose the in “office” option- as we couldn’t do this at home, but yet did not want a bright sterile vet environment either. They allowed for our other dog to come say goodbye too. Dr Lauren was the most kind, compassionate human I’ve ever met, with such a sweet demeanor. During such a hard hard process, she made us feel comfortable and gave us however much time we needed. I can’t imagine having to do this on our own, or having to take her little body somewhere on our own. Herons crossing does it all for you, which made it more peaceful and less stressful. Dr Lauren is a gift from God. Our Molly was 14 yrs old and suffering from extreme Alzheimer’s/Dementia that was just progressively getting worse. She could no longer be a dog. It was still the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do and will never forget the 12 yrs I’ve had with her. Dr Lauren knew she was a special girl. She also gave us a clay footprint which was a nice touch. Thank you Dr Lauren, my husband and I will be forever grateful for the peaceful passing you gave our Molly Mae. ❤️

Dr. Krista was an amazing addition to our very sad, sad day when we said goodbye to our beloved Aladdin, our companion for over 11 years. She was comforting, patient, kind and so warm and loving, even though she had just met Aladdin for the first time. This day was a hard day, and although the thought of never seeing Aladdin play, go for walks, and do all the funny things he used to do, will not be a part of our family anymore, Dr. Krista left us with the feeling of peace and that Aladdin would be well taken care of even to the very end. Thank you Dr. Krista for what you do and how you helped us through this unprecedented process.

When our beloved Golden Retriever, Peluche, took a sudden (but not unexpected) turn for the worse, we knew we had to have him put to sleep as soon as possible. We made the decision on a Friday night, and found an animal hospital just blocks away that was open on Saturday. We stayed up all night with him, comforting him as best we could and letting him know just how much we loved and appreciated him. When I called the hospital at 8am, they said they didn't have any space available that day. Thank goodness they provided me with the phone number for Heron's Crossing for in-home euthanasia. I called and the consultant couldn't have been more professional and empathetic. We secured an 11am appointment with Dr. Lauren. She arrived on time and was soooooo sweet and understanding. She explained the process and possibilities of somewhat negative reaction Peluche may have to the anesthesia (as he had been vomiting a few time during the night). After saying goodbye to our dear friend and companion, we gave him peace and comfort. There was no drama or negative reactions, he simply fell asleep knowing we were there by his side. After a couple of minutes had passed, we assisted Dr. Lauren in placing Peluche on a stretcher, giving him his favorite toy, and covering him for his ride to the crematorium (they provided his ashes and returned the favorite toy to us later). We served as pall bearers and walked to her van, carrying the stretcher with the worn out body of our friend, knowing his was again healthy and happy, and that his spirit was still connected to us. When faced with the option of loading our sick dog into our car ourselves, a very uncomfortable process for Peluche. Taking him to the hospital where noise and strangers and bright lights and other animals would have been extremely traumatic for both Peluche and us. The in-home option offered privacy, comfort, familiar surroundings and personalized service. I cannot praise the team that took care of us and Peluche enough. When you are faced with this painful task, make it easy on your and your pet, contact Heron's Crossing.

I highly recommend Herons Crossing. They were there for me during one of the hardest times in my life. My 4 lb baby girl got cancer and spread to her lungs. My vet recommended Herons Crossing, which I am so thankful for. They were so kind and loving. The vet who showed up at my house was compassionate and patient as I prepared myself for her transition. She let me hold her the entire time and it was the most peaceful moment I had witnessed in a long time. She walked me through every step and what to expect. She was patient and kind. When she took her away she wrapped her up in blanket and carried her away in a basket. I knew she was in good hands. I'm so thankful for Herons Crossing and the service they provide. I hig
