How to Save Money at University Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I get annoyed by how hard it is to get in to see the vet. If I ever have an emergency, I know I can’t get them in to see their regular doctor for at least a few weeks. Even when I do get an appointment, I’m never seen on time. Despite all that once I get in front of Dr Hernandez I remember why I never find another veterinarian. I can tell that she really cares about her patients and she does a thorough examination. She always listens to all my questions and dresses all my concerns thoroughly. I never feel like she’s rushing or halfway out the door. She’s gives me and my pups all of her attention during our appointment. There’s a reason why they’re not taking any new clients. They’re good at what they do and they’re affordable. Wish they just had more vets working or not so much clients lol.

We’re so bummed we’ve moved so far away from this place. We’ve dealt with both Dr. Ash and Dr. Hernandez and they’ve been fantastic. They’re kind, genuine, patient, and really listen. I know they’re always super busy and it’s because they’re so wonderful but we’ve never felt rushed. We took our pup here for a multitude of reasons for the 5+ years we lived in Orange County and it’s always been positive. We had to get a teeth cleaning for our pup and Dr Ash gave us a heads up that prices would go up but to hold on to our treatment cost paper he printed out and said they’d honor the old prices moving forward with no deadline. Their staff is always friendly and remembers our Pups name whenever she comes in. They’re all so sweet to her. She’s terrified of the visit and gets motion sickness and anxiety in the car. So we appreciate them taking extra care with her. Since our move, we’ve had to request medical records and documents from them a handful of times for the new vets we’ve gone to and they’ve always gone above and beyond. Even responding to after hours requests when they didn’t have to. If you’re looking for a vet, don’t hesitate to take your babies here. It can get busy and they’re always booked out pretty far, but it’s all worth it for the quality of care you’ll receive.

The staff & doctors are amazing, caring, and thoughtful. When it was time for us to let go of our dog Zeus, they made a heartbreaking moment bearable with their kindness; I am grateful for the love they showed our boy as well as their compassion and understanding at such a difficult time.

I've been going here since I got my dog over 2 years ago. The staff is always friendly and Dr. Hernandez is amazing! She's very detailed and takes her time explaining everything. Their facility is super clean and neat. What every medical office should look like. Does not smell like that old veterinarian office smell whatsoever. They even take their time to write my dog's name and draw art work on their board to welcome him every single time.

Great staff and care! Our cat broke his toes and our regular vet was too booked. Based on great reviews we went to University and we so happy with our cats care. The vets are wonderful and beyond being knowledgeable, they truly care. I've been to some places where I felt all they wanted to do was sell me something, ( like Los Al Vet...), but this place was different. I just wish they were closer to us, but worth the drive for the level of care.
