How to Save Money at St. Marys Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I haven't taken my furbabies here yet. However, I stopped in one day to check this place out. We are new to the area, and I've had trouble finding the right veterinarian care for my furbabies. I won't take my babies to just anyone! The young lady at the front desk was so pleasant, cheerful, and helpful that I knew I was in the right place. I have appointments starting in the first part of August. My furbabies and I can't wait to meet the rest of the staff!

I’ve been going to St. Mary’s Animal Clinic for about 5 years. They always treat me and my dogs very well, you can tell they truly care about the animals. I feel like all of my concerns about my dogs are taken seriously and they always give plenty of options for treatments and will follow up to make sure it’s helping. My only complaint is that they can book up fast! So sometimes I have to use another vet when they can’t see him soon enough, but it makes sense that would happen since this vet office is so great. I would highly recommend St Mary’s to anyone! Thanks for taking such good care of my pets!

Staff is very helpful and the Vets are so good with the animals. They take the time to explain everything you need to know to have a happy healthy pet. I trust them completely with my Cooper and Riley

I am so upset that Dr. Benitez was let go from this practice!! I have been coming to St. Mary's Animal Clinic for quite a while and Dr. Benitez had always taken fabulous care of all my fur babies. He would get on the floor each and everytime I brought my dogs in. He always made sure my babies had what they needed, called in the evening to check in on them, texted to see how they were doing after surgery and even checked in with me after I had to have surgery due to a dog bite. I was there last week with a follow up to a neuter surgery and kennel cough. My dog started to have issues over the weekend and I called this morning to see if I could get him in today. I was told that Dr. B was no longer there and that the office manager was upset that I was allowed to carry a balance of less than $100.00. I've always paid my bills to them but Dr. B was so gracious to make sure that my animals weren't in pain and were taken care of. I've spent several thousand dollars over the past few months there and now the new office manager wants to make a stink about $96.00. If this is the way they are going to do business now then I definitely won't be back and will be looking for someplace new to take care of my fur babies. I've also requested all of my records for my 5 cats and 4 dogs. I will definitely miss the incredible office staff, minus the management. My fur babieswill also miss coming there because they felt so much at home. It's really a sad time for everyone who loved Dr. Benitez and the staff.

Super friendly staff in a clean environment . It was quiet and the time I had my appointment, there was no one else in the waiting room so it made my puppy’s first visit a calm and quick visit for his shots.
