How to Save Money at VEG ER for Pets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Hey Dad

I can't say enough about how grateful I am for the outstanding care my dog Hershey received at Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG). From the moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly by the receptionist, who immediately rushed us to the treatment room. A team of compassionate, skilled professionals jumped into action, treating Hershey with the utmost care and attention. I instantly felt reassured that Hershey was in the best hands. They helped keep him calm and relaxed, which in turn eased my own anxiety. Dr. Dan Loiacono was exceptional—he spent so much time with me, truly listened, and made me feel like my dog genuinely mattered to them. I returned two days later, and the service was even better than the first time. Every staff member takes pride in their work, and it shows. They all clearly love animals and treat your pet as if it were their own. I only wish Dr. Dan could be Hershey’s regular vet! If your pet ever faces an emergency, trust me—bringing them here will give you peace of mind. Your pet will be in the best hands.

Dr. Mcguigan was so kind and attentive. The tech that assisted was also very kind and helpful. Dr. M was very upfront about my bunny's condition (which I appreciated) but helped to reassure me with my options. She showed such care for my baby during such a scary time. When I got home and remembered questions I had, she was available so quickly by email. I am still nursing him back to health, but I definitely recommend going here. update: i had to bring my baby back at 10pm. Dr. M was still there thankfully and saw him right away. she was very honest with me about his condition and gave me the option to stay with him to say goodbye. all staff were so kind during the process. they made paw prints for him at the end that i will cherish forever. we will miss willow so much but are comforted in knowing that he received the best care.

Our dog showed signs of a blockage. Our local vet said he didn't have the equipment for the tests that may be needed. He recommended we go to VEG. They took our pup right away and knew how to help her without unnecessary expensive tests. We are very grateful for their quick, gentle, and knowledgeable response.

We had a very scary experience with our 1&1/2 year old English bulldog. She was bleeding from her nose, crying, limping and had bruising on her stomach. We rushed her to VEG and from start to finish, the doctors and staff here were so kind and loving to our puppy. She spent almost 4 days there where she even had to receive a blood transfusion from a donor dog. I don’t know whose dog that is but that may have saved her life, so thank you . We thank found out she has an autoimmune disease. I will forever be grateful to this staff for all they have done. They kept in communication the whole time and we could call whenever we wanted and update, night or day. We even just popped in whenever we wanted to visit her. I think one of the staff even stayed in her enclosure and read her book just to keep Roxy company. You never want to be in these kinds of situations but if you have to this is the place to go!

I had a very good experience recently. My dog was not well and was aggressive towards the staff. Carlee, the assistant was so patient with him & had such a calm demeanor. I immediately liked her. Dr Brianna Mcguigan was the doctor we saw. She was compassionate, patient and comforting. She handled my dog so well. She had patience & made me feel comfortable. She communicated exactly what was happening along the way. She was able to rectify our situation & I did not feel taken advantage of. She worked with me. I would highly recommend. Thank you to a wonderful staff!
