How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My son and I brought in a feral kitty that we had been feeding for a week, trying to tame and capture. Finally, using tuna, he ended up in our humane trap. I found VEG after looking for an emergency vet cuz this kitty only came late at night, once at 3am. So I knew I'd need to be prepared on a place to go if we ever caught this poor thing. It was midnight on a Saturday when we came to VEG. Calling ahead, the person that answered was very receptive and didn't hesitate, bring him in! The vet and techs that were there put their heads together for a game plan, as kitty was so upset and within minutes, they had him sedated and we got to watch them as they got this stupid jar off his head. Of course there was infection and bone showing. I think all of us were just relieved that he didn't have to die alone and with this jar on his head. Yes, the absolute humane thing was to put him to rest. Maybe if he was tame, we would have had a different outcome, but how would you administer medicine and care to this poor feral kitty that had obviously suffered long enough? These professionals were so caring, compassionate and empathetic to this poor kitty, and to my son and me. The vet talked us through what was gonna happen, and they talked to and consoled the kitty even though he was still sedated and wouldn't know what was happening. We all felt so bad for it to end this way, the mood was palpable in the room, they all cared so much. I'm just so impressed with how they handled it all and the care they showed. Just simply amazing. There are special places in heaven for kitties like this and I'm so grateful this group of people helped us lead him there. 💕

Everyone was very apologetic for having us wait 3+ hours while there were multiple other more high intensity emergency surgeries happening- our girl was in an oxygen tank so we were more than ok with waiting it out. We were checked on by at least 8 different people and they even gave her a little hide and blankets. Having been to other VEG locations before I can say this is my favorite one. I love the open floor plan of the waiting room & it feels more like an emergency room than a clinic. At other locations I was not able to be with my pets while they were in oxygen tanks, but being able to sit and monitor them myself while doctors and nurses are busy with other patients is very comforting.

Everything about this emergency vet was great, especially compared to the ones we’ve visited in the past. The atmosphere was clean and comforting. All of the staff and doctors were amazing! Angela greeted me and my pup, Nova, when we walked in the door and got us situated right away. She was super nice and helpful through everything. Although Nova was extremely anxious and uncomfortable, due to the situation she was in, they were able to do what they needed to do. The doctor that performed Novas surgery was very personable and kept us in the loop throughout the whole experience. We were able to bring Nova home in less than 24 hours post surgery due to her progress. They took very good care of her overnight and now she is recovering at home.

After countless disappointing and traumatic ER vet visits over the years, my hope in humanity and after hour vet care was sprung back to life after receiving timely, kind, thoughtful, and honest care from the incredible team at VEG. My frenchie came in for an allergic reaction and I am happy to say she’s happy and healthy and I thank the team for their prompt care for her. I hope I don’t need an ER vet any time soon, but this will be the only place I recommend and will go to in the future. Love the thoughtful and kind, open transparent business model, too. Can tell they care from the moment you walk in. Thanks Dr Davison and staff!

Wonderful experience today at VEG! Took my elderly cat in because I thought he was experiencing heat stroke. Immediately upon our arrival, 4-6 people sprung into action to assess him and quickly came up with a treatment plan. Everyone there was so kind, caring, and provided excellent care. Special shout out to Dr. Davison and nurse Angela for their help today. 100% would recommend and will not hesitate to go back if needed.
