How to Save Money at Livewell Animal Hospital of Chevy Chase

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We recently brought our newly adopted 4-month-old puppy, Leo, to Livewell Animal Hospital and we couldn’t be happier with the care we received. From the moment we walked in, the staff was warm, patient, and incredibly helpful. They took the time to answer all our questions (we had a lot!) and even gave breed-specific advice tailored to Leo’s needs, which we really appreciated as new pet parents. The clinic had a calm, welcoming atmosphere that helped Leo feel at ease, and he left with treats and brand-new toys. It was clear they genuinely care about the pets and families they serve. We’re so glad we chose Livewell and highly recommend this veterinary team to anyone looking for knowledgeable, kind, and thorough care for their pets!

Been googling different vets around the area for our new kitties and came across here. When I called to make an appointment, the staff was so sweet and nice that I could already tell it’s gonna be a great visit! Tech was so kind as well he opened the door for us and also shared lot of great informations. Very communicative and he seems like he genuinely LOVES animals. Both our kitties behaved really well around him! Dr Lopez did wellness exam on our kitties and he was so gentle and sweet. He checked very thoroughly and I could feel he does care about animals and also very knowledgeable! We were clueless about one of our babies having pectus excavatum and Dr. Lopez quickly caught that and thankfully we can start monitoring our kitty early enough. From the first visit, everyone has been soooo sweet and gave me great first impressions. With these staffs, I do feel safe leaving my kitties under their care when needed❤️

Went in for a new pet screening and a couple annual shots. Very friendly and professional staff, the DR was great and explained everything in detail. Even gave a discount for being our first visit and a doggy goody bag. Well worth making them your primary vet.

Update 06/24/2025 Saw Dr. Lopez for my other pup who seemed to not be feeling well. Was seen promptly (day of) and Dr.Lopez was able to diagnose and treat, relieving my concerns. Bereda, the vet tech, is especially wonderful. Staff are always great. My regular vet is closed on Mondays and I was in search of someone with same day availability to check on my special boy who was displaying some concerning behaviors. I was penciled in same day and promptly seen. The staff is very friendly and welcoming and the office is nice and clean. Dr. Hampton was great- attentive and kind. Can’t ask for much else.

I brought our pup here for a follow-up visit to establish care after an urgent issue over the weekend. The staff was very kind to me and my wife in making the appointment and answering questions. The vet tech (I am forgetting his name, but he was a young man with dark curly hair and a beard) was lovely with our pup. She was very scared, but when he had to hold her for the exam and procedures, he whispered to her and kissed her head. It was clear he wanted her to be comfortable and really cared. Dr. Ken Lopez was knowledgeable and professional. We have just moved to the area, but we know we have found our new vet.
