How to Save Money at Brookside Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve read several bad reviews of the same situation bad manager skills, dog needs to be seen for more money in their pocket! Telephone skills of the office manager needs to improve!, talks over you when speaking. my female dog was spayed 3.5 years ago she is in heat. I asked what are they going to do about this I was told the vet would call me several times still have not heard from either one of them, them the manager called and said the receptionist was wrong I would not get a call from either vet. My dog needs to be seen and they want me to pay for the visit. I will show records of her recent visits to her new caring vet but they will not touch or see non of my 5 dogs! They never heard of a female going into heat after being spayed yet it's funny how I do know someone else that also had this issue 8 years ago with their dog that went to the same vet. How many others are out there that this may have happened to. We are past the statute of limitations to sue them. Pa is 2 years from treatment. But we can file a formal complaint with the Pennsylvania department of professional licensing which will launch an investigation and be a permanent record on the vets record. I was already vivid that this was the 3rd person I talked to and non of which was the vet. Want to mention they are an animal hospital with very few evening hours. We now have to pay for a very costly surgery to have this fixed because of their negligence.

Front staff is great and they will always help us with Pablo. Dr is very straightforward they don't go over anything else but issue. Hard to explain but he hardly even made eye contact with us. As with most pet parents you taking them in and you want just an overall on how they are doing.

My 10yr old pitty pup 🐶 had a mass/tumor coming out his behind he then started bleeding excessively from his nose so I took him to my local vet...I like this doctor because he shows no fear in my dog which is intimidating looking and doesn't like going to any vet but is the sweetest friendliest dog with ppl other dogs and cats he grew up with 2...for this reason I just go to him, it did seem a little pricey but then again I didn't look elsewhere so I could be wrong...he was scheduled a few days later I picked him up later that day got my instructions medications and he is doing fine he did also get neutered...the ladies are super nice and helpful...just waiting for the biopsy results 🤞🙏 thankyou all! 😊

Plain and simple.....If you value your pets life, DO NOT take your pet here!! My pet was treated for one issue and another issue happened. I wanted x-rays taken after 1.5 months, but Dr. H INSISTED it was my animals diabetes. Finally went somewhere else, and it WAS NOT the diabetes!! My animal was very sick which could have been prevented if the x-rays were taken. I will making a compliant against Dr. H. The place smells and is dirty. The rooms are never cleaned before you go in there. Dr, H is quick to say what is wrong and then disappears, never around to answer any questions.
