How to Save Money at Colorado Animal Specialty & Emergency (CASE)

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

CASE was so incredibly helpful, understanding, and supportive through our recent visit. They got me resources to help my boy with surgery and really held my hand as I made hard decisions for Roscoe who is making a full recovery from a dog fight! I couldn’t afford surgery here, but they helped with their angel fund and found me a place that could operate for less. Thank you so much CASE!

Fantastic expert care. My dog was in emergency in the middle of the night and the ICU following and I was able to come visit her with no pressure from the team. The staff was in touch regularly about her care and prognosis and helped me find additional resources that I needed. I was very impressed by the world class facility and the whole team of specialists. Even the front desk staff was compassionate and helpful. While I wish such a place wasn’t necessary in this world it was a huge comfort to me to know I had a somewhere to take my best friend when she needed help.

I was here on March 3, 2025 with my dog Callie. She had a traumatic experience getting there, and I felt she was treated very irresponsibly by the oncologists she had been seeing at CSU. Unfortunately she ended up passing at CASE. However, I couldn’t have asked for a better ER team to care for her. They were knowledgeable, efficient, patient, explained things clearly, and treated Callie with dignity and respect. I felt that they truly cared about her wellbeing. Thank you so much to Dr. Roberts, as well as the nurse/tech and the front desk staff that was present (I wish I knew their names). I’m distraught over Callie’s passing, but grateful to have been able to say goodbye and have had such a great team caring for her. Thank you so much 🙏🏼❤️

i cannot say enough good things about CASE. I took my cat here for I-131 treatment and they were so sweet to her and communicative with me. there was a camera i could use to see my kitty during her quarantine and the staff texted informative and funny updates about her at least twice a day. Dr. Brown and the care team are kind, knowledgeable, empathetic, and patient- both with humans and pets. they also have a pharmacy and a CVCA in house which made dealing with my pets myriad problems as easy as it could be. i had so many worries throughout the process and the team there made them dissolve with their round the clock care and in depth knowledge of the process. i am so glad i came here for this procedure and so thankful to the team for putting my mind at ease. thank you CASE!

CASE is an amazing facility staffed by a stellar array of doctors, veterinary technicians, administrative personnel and other animal loving humans. They are caring, kind, compassionate, and extraordinarily competent. They do an excellent job at keeping the human family informed with multiple daily conversations. The visiting hours are generous and staff are respectful of the human-pet visitation time. My only wish is that they would provide medical treatment to me and my human children because their care is superior to any I have received anywhere. We are lucky to have CASE here in Boulder.
