How to Save Money at Bloor-Kipling Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this clinic. I paid $367 for my dog’s treatment, including medications and skin-care products. Unfortunately, his skin condition did not improve with the treatment plan. The only noticeable improvement I saw was while he was taking the prescribed antibiotic, and his condition began worsening again after the antibiotic ran out. What frustrated me the most was the complete lack of follow-up. I called the clinic three times in one week because my dog was suffering and developing fresh skin lesions. I repeatedly explained that the antibiotic had been the only thing that appeared to help and asked to speak with the veterinarian about what we should do next. Each time, I was told the doctor would call me back—either within an hour or after the clinic closed at 5 p.m. On one occasion, I even called again approximately 15 minutes before closing to remind them that I was still waiting for the promised call. I still received no call. What makes this experience even more disappointing is what happened afterward. After spending $367 at a veterinary clinic without getting the results or follow-up I was looking for, I ended up ordering a different medicated shampoo and probiotic chews from Amazon based on additional research. The shampoo cost me approximately $50. Shockingly, the products I ordered myself from Amazon helped my dog significantly more than the products I received from the veterinary clinic. His skin finally began improving. I never expected to spend hundreds of dollars at a veterinarian, repeatedly call them for help when the treatment wasn't working, receive no promised callback, and then see better results from products I simply ordered online. I understand that veterinary medicine is not always straightforward and that one treatment will not work for every animal. My issue is how the situation was handled. When a treatment isn't working, the appropriate response should be to reassess the animal or communicate with the owner—not repeatedly promise that the veterinarian will call and then never follow through. I wasn't demanding medication without veterinary approval. I was trying to get help for a dog who was visibly suffering and asking the veterinarian to reassess the situation. After this experience, I have completely lost confidence in this clinic. The fact that I received better results from a roughly $50 shampoo and probiotic chews purchased from Amazon after spending $367 here makes the experience even more frustrating. Based on my experience, I will not be returning and cannot recommend this clinic.

Dr. Sakhal and his assistant Victoria are highly professional. This is our second year bringing our little Yorkie to this clinic for vaccinations, and we’ve always had a great experience. The clinic is clean, welcoming, and reasonably priced. Thank you !

I've been coming here for 5 years because they're close to me and they have a fantastic veterinary assistant with colorfully dyed hair, but enough is enough. As awesome as she is, the clinic she works for is horrible. I'll list off my grievances: 1. Overbooked: there are 5 dogs all waiting for appointments at any given time, only one vet, and only 4 chairs squeezed side by side. 2. The receptionist is rude, and she has hung up on me many many times. 3. The receptionist has to go help the vet with just about every patient. 4. The one time they didn't hang up on me, they put me on hold for 40 minutes. 5. They called me yesterday telling me that the appointment was at 2:45pm when I had originally booked it at 4pm. Foolishly, I showed up at 2:40pm. It's now 4:00pm and there are still several dogs ahead of us. 6. The vet clearly doesn't like dogs, draws back in a panic when my dog so much as tries to sniff his hand, and he uses his assistants (and receptionist) to basically headlock my dog for every injection, which just makes her even more scared. In conclusion, the vet has no idea how to manage his practice correctly, and simply preys on the fact that there are a lot of desperate people who need help with their pets. Instead of the 5 minute walk, I'm going to drive my dog to a different clinic 15 minutes away. Not to mention that the only place for dogs to pee outside the clinic is full of broken glass and garbage.

Friendly and helpful staff made my first vet visit seamless. Initially received a quotation over email, then when I was ready a quick phone call got me an appointment the very next day. Prices are some of the most competitive I found and you can tell the staff truly care about your pets. I'm really happy I picked this clinic! Edit: I did a spay with them and my cat recovered wonderfully

Terrible experience. Moved from out of province and needed a vet to do a fairly urgent procedure on my dog. I called around a few places and decided to give them a chance. I explained the situation over the phone and was told I could be accommodated and explained my worries and the semi urgency needing care. I went for my initial appointment in expectation I would be seen for the procedure the same week after an examination and estimate. Upon arriving the receptionist was not very welcoming. I got to see the vet, he explained what I needed, how the procedure would go, talked about after care, pain meds, got a quote, and was told that they could do this no problem. They offered to do same day blood work to make sure my dog was stable as standard before surgery. After being in the office discussing everything with the vet for about 30 mins. I asked what day she can be seen. That’s when the receptionist brought in their booking booklet, because nothing was done digitally, but hand-written in a book in a non organized manor. As they literally pulled the book back and forth from each other, the receptionist being rude and unprofessional, they came to the conclusion that the vet was going on vacation for a week and they could not in fact take on my pets procedure. And I was told to either wait 15-ish days or to go find another vet, but also told me that the care I needed should not wait another 15 days. This was very discouraging as I took the time and gas to drive to the clinic, if this place was organized they should have mentioned over the phone that the vet was going on vacation and this type of service could not have been accommodated at this time, especially after expressing I would need vet care the same week of me initially contacting the vet office. Not to mention he made me put a muzzle on my dog and she is extremely friendly, had her sit there for 30 mins with it on while wasting my time and didn’t even lay a finger on her to do anything to even need a muzzle for safety reasons.
