How to Save Money at Westport Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've been bringing my cats to Westport Animal Hospital for almost 5 years now and even though I've not lived in that area of town for 3 of those 5 years, I wouldn't take my babies anywhere else! It's worth a few extra minutes in the car for the level of care they receive here. The staff are all very kind, caring, and knowledgeable, and they do a great job, of course. But most importantly, I can tell that each of my 4 cats feel safe with them (even the one cat who makes the biggest fuss about going to the vet). I trust that my babies are always getting the best care, and I don't have to break the bank to do it, either, which is wonderful. Highly recommend!

Would recommend over and over again! Dr. Mitchell is amazing & you truly can tell him and his staff are doing this because of their heart & passion not for the money ! They were amazing with my baby girl who needed a c section after 24 hours labor no puppies and even saved one of the puppies which is a total miracle . They will forever have me as a customer 🩷

Dr. Mitchell is a wonderful, no nonsense veterinarian and he’s been a great help to me and my animals. He’s also way better priced than anyone else I have found. As an example, Crescent Hill animal Hospital wanted $600 to spay my kitty and he charged me about $250. Thank you, Dr. Mitchell!

After my last experience, I won't be going back. If you enjoy a clinic that smells like chemicals, being charged without consent, and rude staff... this is for you. I called to have our dogs scheduled for dental work and the receptionist kept avoiding my direct questions. She kept saying this is what you will have to pay for, but wouldn't say how much. I am not going to schedule if I don't know the cost. So, I asked again for specifics. She got annoyed by my questions, put me on hold out of nowhere, then came back and said this clinic wasn't the right fit for us. I mentioned how confusing this was bc it is their job to answer questions about pricing and what the surgery entailed. Especially since I have been taken advantage of at this clinic. When my cat was last brought in, the vet completed x-rays without my permission, even though I was in the other room. That cost an additional $300+. Everything about this clinic is a bit sketchy and they were right, this clinic isn't for me. I prefer transparency and kindness.

I have a 11 year old cheeweenie that has been in perfectly good health . I noticed him now eating much and low energy so after a couple of days called and made a an appt . We where seen on may 10th 2026 and all vet could say is they would do blood work and call me back the next day. Well next day comes and vet calls saying the blood work wasn’t sent in and was forgot about . That caused me to be really upset due to my dog being really sick and would have to wait another day for blood results and mine knew the vet or no one gave me any advice on what I could do until the bloodwork came back. When I was concerned and got upset and asked the assistant on what I can do she made a comment and proceeded to say your dog is not dying, and either they can sit in the blood results are not, and if not, give me my refund and I could take him somewhere else. ! There was no sympathy or empathy given, or any source or sense of urgency due to my dog being really sick. The vet then proceeded to tell me that he is a thin dog that looks like that he’s been sick for a long time which wasn’t true. He has only been sick for the last past couple of days. Had to end up giving my refund back and taking Him to another vet. The assistant also had the nerve to tell me that my dog wasn’t dying and that we could wait another day which my dog has been sick for over three days and is an emergency and for her to tell me that was very, very unprofessional and very unprofessional of not sitting in blood results the day that it was done and being careless just to forget about them. This is my dog, which is like a child to me. Very, very, very bad experience with them being when if it’s an emergency, do not take your animals there!
