How to Save Money at Shively Animal Clinic & Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had to visit Shively Animal Clinic on a Sunday cause our girl told us she couldn’t wait another day and that it was time for her go. We were devastated. As busy as it was, everyone here was very attentive, understanding, and did not rush us at all. The nurse first came in and was so empathetic and sweet. They had to take our Muffin back to get an IV. She came back right away and then Dr. Mary Jane came in and explained everything to us. Muffin went quickly and quietly. We were allowed to spend some time with her afterwards. The nurse and doctor both came in and let us tell them about her and comforted us letting us know we were doing the right thing. We just picked her ashes up and we did get a paw print and urn and they included a little clip of her hair. They truly made a very sad part of our life the best it could be and comforted us so. We believe we were meant to say goodbye to our baby girl there.

I’ve been going to Shively Animal Hospital for years. Yes the wait can be long but the care that the babies receive is well worth it. They care about the baby and keep you informed of what’s happening. My Bitsy Has been in and out of the hospital, the last two weeks due to kidney failure. Dr. Joyce has been wonderful to both Bitsy and I. I wouldn’t think about going anywhere else. My vet bill would’ve been at least four times what Shively charged me for as many times that Bitsy has been admitted to the hospital.

They are very caring when your dog dies. They did a good job on my leelee's death. The best is Mary Jane. Sent me a card when my dog past. Still bring my Molly to them. Helping me with my other senior dog. Highly recommend them.

Very good staff at very reasonable prices, which means they are popular and busy. They don’t do appointments, you show up early to get your name on a list, and either hang around or go home waiting to be called. But we love them. They’ve taken great care of our dogs.

They will save your pet they will help you figure out financ es it will give you the best options for you and your animal. The only complaint about this place is that everyone knows the above mentioned and so it is packed 24/7 unless it is an actual dire emergency your appointment can end up being the next day depending on how busy they are. They'll get to you eventually!, but be prepared and there is no calling ahead for an appointment. You have to go there sign in wait for their call go back home wait for their call again go back check in Wait in the car or in the waiting room and then wait for them that is literally the only thing wrong with this place everything else is perfect it just sucks when you have a small child or even older children with separation anxiety having to make so many trips back and forth and you never know when sometimes they can call you within 15 minutes of you signing in meaning you just walked in the door and now it's time to go back, but like I said everything else makes up for that it's so busy because of how great they are and the quality of the staff and the location and the caliper of their veterinarians. I love shively I just hate the process especially being a single mom.
