How to Save Money at Jefferson Animal Hospital & Regional Emergency Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Honestly if I couldn’t I wouldn’t give them any stars. I only went to this animal hospital because it was the closest to me but now I am reminded why I will never be back there again. September 2nd I brought my dog, Kera, in to seek medical attention due to vomiting, severe diarrhea and discharge coming from her rectum. I was informed that she was “stable” and was moved to a waiting room where she passed away 2 hours later. Not once did they check on her, around an hour and 30 minutes I went back up to the front and was asking how much longer would it take. I was told 20-30 minutes and she couldn’t “promise me anything”. My dog stopped breathing in that room and they tried to resuscitate her but that’s all they did. The doctor even tried to accuse me of not noticing her health declining when it was already apparent the moment she stepped in the hospital. They worked quick to get me to pay $250 but did absolutely nothing after that. By the end of the day I had paid the $250 “stable” fee and $200 for group cremation but quickly change my mind to a private one and never got my money back until I called numerous times wanting answers. I reached out and asked to speak to a supervisor and I was only given an email. There was no sense of urgency and I feel as though maybe if I had went to a different emergency maybe Kera would still be alive. I have nothing but her ashes left and I couldn’t be more heartbroken.

June 18th I brought my chf baby in for compassionate euthanasia. It wasn't even a full 3 months from his diagnosis but he was declining fast. If money and love could have saved him from having this condition he would still be here. I knew giving myself more days with him would only give him more bad days. I didn't want him to pass alone or to experience a traumatic suffocating death. I was so distraut I couldn't speak much but I cant thank the staff that day enough for being so kind and caring while making sure my boy was as comfortable as possible during his final minutes.

hello im writing this to help someone who is looking to bring their pet here. we brought my cat in around 4:30 am. he was very ill and found out he had a heart murmur and a blood clot in the back of his legs which caused him to drag them as he used his front legs to walk. for the walk in exam it cost $189 and for the euthanasia up to 15lb it cost $78. typically theres an underlying heart condition in this type of scenario and was also told by the vet and technician theres an 85% chance of that, and that its not if he will clot again but when. he was uncontrollably urinating on himself, and neurologically out of it. they wanted $42 for blood collection and $258 to take that to the lab but because we knew the chances we decided to not go that far. my mom and brother were the once who brought my cat in. mom said she thought the vet ms shumar was really kind. i got there around 5:30 am and did not get to meet her but did have a button to push to notify a technician to come in and explain to me what was going on and their findings. we were told to take our time and thats what we did. we spent what felt like the shortest two hours with our cat and in that time was not bothered or rushed, before finally letting him go. when we pressed the button to have someone come in to start the process, a vet named carter greeted us. she was extremely sweet and let us know that the vet was somewhere else and we could wait on her or have her (carter) give the euthanasia. we also talked to for a while. she offered us fur vials which is her idea of repurposing vaccine vials. she was so sweet to my cat and even while talking to us about everything, continued to pet him. they did already have a catheter put in his leg, so they didnt have to poke him again if decided on the euthanasia which helped. we decided to let cater do it, and she told us about the process before, and while doing it also talked us through. even when my cat was gone and she needed to make sure there wasnt a heart beat, she still talked to him as if he was still with us by letting him know “im gonna lift your arm buddy to check your heart”. when our cat passed many years ago, the vet we went to was outdated and had bad bed manners and lost files on years before that when we brought another cat to them so this experience was very different. i do with they gave my cat something to put him at ease in those two hours we spent with him. i know this is something every pet owner says, but i dont believe it was offered at all when we first arrived or even told the cost of something like that. they do partner with a cremation service but you can also choose your own. the cremation service charges $170 for individual/private and $140 for group. i also want to add we did take my cat back home in a box to let his brother see him so he could understand and start his grieving process as well, then we brought him back to the vet and the next day the cremation people picked him up. i did have the cremation people bring him back to the vet because i decided i wanted to go through someone else. i went through friends and family cremations on preston and did aquamation instead which is done with water instead of fire. its supposed to be better for the environment and overall was cheaper than the cremation place the vet was partnered through. at friends and family they offered to pick my cat up with no charge. it costs $130 for the full service and with that you get a in loving memory memorial certificate, paw print, and nose print + 20% more ashes. i am going to keep him in a ceramic urn from amazon until i cant afford a personalized one. you can also go to a thrift so find one. at the end of the days its just a ceramic jar, no need to spend $150 on one from a crematorium. i hope this review helps someone.

My experience with Jefferson Animal Hospital was deeply upsetting and is now part of ongoing litigation. During one of the most emotional moments a pet owner can face, I was treated with a shocking lack of compassion and professionalism. Before diagnostic testing had even been completed, an employee repeatedly pushed euthanasia and stated that my dog “had cancer,” despite no confirmed diagnosis at that time. The comments made to me were extremely distressing and inappropriate. I later received written communication from management acknowledging that the employee’s handling of the situation was wrong and that the veterinarian on duty witnessed the interaction. What makes this even more heartbreaking is that no trace of cancer was ultimately found. My dog is now home, living her best life on medication, surrounded by love and care. While her life expectancy may be shortened due to her medical condition, she still has precious time left with the people who love her, and I am grateful every day that I did not make a permanent decision based on fear and pressure. Despite multiple emails, phone calls, and even certified letters sent to management and ownership, I have struggled to get transparency and accountability regarding this matter. Pet owners place enormous trust in emergency veterinary staff during vulnerable moments. In my opinion, compassion, professionalism, and ethical communication were seriously lacking in my case. I encourage others to ask questions, advocate for their pets, and carefully consider their options when seeking emergency veterinary care.

The staff at Jefferson Animal Hospital and Regional Emergency Center were kind and caring during my visit. My lovely dog ate at least 6 dark chocolate peanut butter cups, and they were the closest 24 hour hospital to me. He had his vitals taken, and we were taken back to a room in about an hour. Dr. McCoy worked on him, and ensured me that they would take blood and take more vitals, but he was probably going to be okay. The waiting room is comfy, as well as the rooms in the back. Every staff member was so kind to me, and did not treat me like an idiot for asking questions. My total inside was about 3 hours, which I felt was perfectly reasonable as my pet was not actively in distress or dying. My total came out to a little over 500 dollars, which I again felt was reasonable. I will be coming back if anything happens to him!
