How to Save Money at Cherokee Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My heart is honestly broken for what Cherokee Animal Hospital has become. I’ve taken my dog here, I’ve had friends, family, and community members rave about how amazing this clinic is. It’s hard to find a vet who is good with big dogs(Sheep, my baby, is a Great Pyrenees and 120 lbs, will include a photo) and my last time at the clinic, I had such a wonderful experience. But what I experienced during my last visit was absolutely horrible. James Grace was extremely impatient, aggressive, and honestly terrifying. He cut my dogs nails so badly they bled(all of them, not just one), pulled his leg out aggressively, and was not gentle or kind to anybody in the clinic, even his fellow staff. Nothing was explained to us( we took our dog in for allergies), and we were given meds that we had no idea how to use. He told us our dog had fleas. We took our dog to another vet, who combed out his fur and looked for flea dirt and other signs. We were told that he has no presence of fleas from that vet. My dog, who is the happiest, most trusting guy in the world, was shaking from anxiety during and after due to James Grace’s behavior. I understand that people have bad days. However, I was then contacted by them after complaining, and told that they thought that I was rude, and essentially that I was a liar. I was not contacted by the clinic, but someone named Peggy who works for them I assume. I was told that James Grace has been a doctor there for 45 years, and is the reason the clinic is still open, because he is,”quick and sees double the patients the other vets do”, therefore, there is no possible way that he could’ve hurt my animal. I was told that I didn’t like that he is shy and doesn’t like to talk(which is not true, honestly prefer it). His family is also the founders of the clinic. Perhaps that day I was stressed out, and was short with the staff. That’s on me, and is unacceptable. I don’t know how that translates to being so cruel to an innocent creature. Honestly, when they contacted me, all I wanted was to be told that they were sorry for such a traumatizing experience. They took no responsibility in how their veterinarian acted. I was told that James Grace is caring, shy, and an amazing person. I wish my baby got that man instead of what we saw at our visit. I’m not sure what exactly we did to them. Maybe it was our vibe. Maybe it was that my partner and I are two queer people covered in tattoos and are alternative. Maybe it was just our faces. That’s all fine if they hate us. But our sweet baby boy did nothing to them, and no innocent animal deserves to be scared. My dog loves the vet, he loves bathes, fireworks, everything. He is not an anxious dog. I’m afraid he is now. I’m genuinely shocked as to how much they’ve gone off the deep end. I’m not saying that this clinic hasn’t been great, they have. I guess not anymore. There are two sides to every story, and they’ve made it very clear that they are taking no ownership in their employees behavior, and will defend him no matter what. That’s fine. But I don’t know what kind of Mom I would be if I didn’t try and warn over pawrents about such a dangerous establishment. I really hope and pray that they can turn things around and get back to the clinic we all have known and loved for years. I also really hope and pray that people are made aware of this, that they correct this behavior, and nobody ever has to go through what we went through.

My fur-son needed a new vet so I chose Cherokee because of location and high reviews. The staff was wonderful! Everyone had a great attitude and they were so kind and sweet to my Linky boy. Prices seemed fair in my opinion. Didn't have to wait long. Glad I chose Cherokee for his new vet.

They saved my Lil pup, he ended up getting parvo, and they was soo good to him, it was expensive. But they helped me find rebates that helped cover the shot. You can just tell they love animals, I couldnt ask for a better veterinary clinic. Ive been with them for several years now with my older dog,

All of my cats have been well taken care of for 20 years. The staff love animals, and you can tell every time. From the techs, front desk, all the way up to Dr Grace and his other veterinarians everyone is caring and knowledgeable. Compassionate care and many in-house labs are a godsend. A++

I’m not very good with English vocabulary, and they didn’t even have the patience to let me finish speaking. I simply called to ask if they could help me get a prescription for Heartgard and Nexgard for my dog. The person who answered the phone had absolutely no patience. She asked me if my dog had any significant illnesses. I said no, I just wanted a prescription for preventive medication. She impatiently interrupted me and asked if my dog had ever had a diagnosis at their hospital. I said no, but asked if I could start a new one. She then asked if I had a regular veterinarian. I didn’t understand what “regular veterinarian” meant, so I said I had previously gotten the same prescription from another clinic. Then she very impatiently threw out, “Then go to your previous hospital,” as if I owed her a huge debt (just a figure of speech to describe how I felt — not literally). Such an impatient receptionist, unwilling to communicate with clients, makes me seriously doubt whether this hospital truly treats its customers with a professional attitude. I would never choose this hospital. All I felt was an angry sense of discrimination.
