How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Find yourself a real vet if you value your pet and your time. I made an appt online and received a confirmation email. When I arrived @ 3:15 for my scheduled 3:30 appt and was told I was not on the schedule. She told me I need call next time for my appt because the online tool does not work. But they would work me in. I was put in a room with my 5.2 lb Maltese who had just been there 1 1/2 month prior for and allergy shot, for 2 and 1/2 hrs. I never saw a vet, only a tech who was nervous and clearly overwhelmed with her job. The tech came in and out of the room many times apologizing for my wait. When she finally took my dog to his exam, they had him for a total of 7-8 mins. Finally I was told that my dog did not weigh enough to take the meds for his allergies. They could prescribe it to him full strength but it would make him sick or they could cut the dose and it probably would not work at all. At that point, I had been there for over 2 hrs and asked to see the vet to ask my questions in person. After waiting another 30 mins in the same 8x6 room with not assurance or help whatsoever, I decided this is not the place for me to waste anymore of my time and my dogs anxiety, and we left. The line of people waiting outside of the exam room was unreal and everyone was on edge and pissed off. Then they have the nerve to leave me voice mails telling me I owe them $72.00 for holding me and my dog hostage for 2 1/2 hrs with no results. GO ANYWHERE ELSE BUT THIS BANFIELD!!!!

This is a good place so far, all vet techs are nice & gentle with my puppy. Wish they would clean the rooms or at least sweep/vacuum in between appts using rooms, my dog is black & when she leaves she has every color hair on her imaginable. Our 2nd visit, the hair looked like tumbleweeds.

Way to expensive, wanted $800 to sedate my dog to clip back a infected toe nail and clip all the other nails. When I paid less then $200 somewhere elsewhere for the same treatment plus his update on rabies as well as his antibiotics and got a follow up to make sure he's doing good. Please save you money from this place.

The scheduling on the app is absolutely trash. It never loads, and the times are wrong from the clinic times. I have an hour to drive, so Ive had to wait for however long till next available. The wait times when i'm actually in the room have been so long. Once I was at the appointment for 2 and a half hours.Which two of the hours was just sitting there. Theres sometimes an older woman ive seen who is not friendly and seems annoyed when you arrive. Even when there was messup with schedueling Dr. Becker didnt show any concern even when I mentioned commute. Very dissapointing and hope theres better improvement.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! They have several slots open online and it will let you book an appointment then when you get here they will say they can’t see you cuz apparently their online schedule doesn’t reflect correctly so either call or don’t waste your time driving here save yourself the time money and energy. My poor cat is stressed in the car and now I had to cause him uneasy anxiety.
