How to Save Money at Animal Doctors

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Last week I called for my 16.5 year old dog to be euthanized. Sassy hadn’t been seen for two years because she hasn’t been sick. The woman I spoke to was very rude and told me because she hadn’t been seen they could not provide me any services and even if they did she was booked out for five weeks. I was also told that a quality of life evaluation had to be done first but I thought that her 16.5 years spoke volume and I wouldn’t be getting her euthanized if there was any quality of life left. My baby was getting dementia and had numerous other issues and we just wanted her out of her misery. I was told to contact urgent care because they couldn’t do it. I get that companies have policies and protocols but you can tell a person no without ever using the word no. It was the lack of compassion and caring which was heartbreaking because I love my dog. I called numerous VETS and was nicely turned down until finally a very caring woman from another VET office recommended Lap of Love and while it was very pricey it was worth it to be treated like a human being. They euthanized Sassy on 8-6-26 in the privacy of our home and it was done so humanely and with so much compassion. We’re heartbroken but dogs just simply don’t live as long as humans and we knew that but the last thing we needed was someone being rude and showing no compassion at this very sad time in our lives. We got her at 6 weeks old and she lived to be 16.5 years and that’s a long time. Sassy was old but she was not sick until the very end and I can’t afford to keep taking my dog to the VET if there were no issues. Hopewell would still express her anal glands from time to time and nothing was ever mentioned about her being seen. The last time they expressed her anal glands I told the girl up front that she was getting up in age and getting close to being euthanized and what was the protocol. The girl was very sweet and said just call to set up an appointment and we will take care of Sassy so I thought everything was ok. If you’re going to be in the pet business at least have compassion for your clients and I thought a place that specializes in pets would know that. I’ll never forget that heartache that I felt when we made the decision to have her put down and what happened at Hopewell will always leave a hole in my heart!!

I looked for a while for a Vet and staff that was there for honest answers and realistic outcomes. To be fair and upfront about pricing. To be compassionate and gentle to my 14 yr old basset hound and best friend Miss LilyMae adjusting to the struggles of her senior yrs. This place has made her comfortable and not afraid of unnecessary procedures that her former vet was doing (not suggesting) for an upsale at my expense. So with that said, we are very happy with the change and can rest easy knowing she gets the respect from the whole team at Animal Doctors. We thank you again!

My baby was a 5 year old Blue Heeler, and we lost him on 9/3/26 thanks to the negligent care received from the doctor. He was severely dehydrated after about 36 hours of not keeping water down. We thought maybe at first he was just drinking too fast, but it was soon obvious that he was dehydrating very quickly and needed immediate medical care. My hushand took him there, and, rather than put him on IV fluids to treat his severe dehydration, he was given a fluid sac in his neck which is intended for mild to moderate dehydration...not severe because it's slow-acting. But even worse, he was then given a concentrated opioid injection and sent home. My husband was seriously told that Max would be high for quite awhile ,and to just let him rest, and that they'd contact us by Tuesday with test results from some blood drawn. So my husband didn't panic when he had to carry him into the house because he couldn't move and just stared straight ahead. He thought he was just stoned. But I was immediately panicked. He left that morning for the vet weak but still able to walk, but returned in much worse condition. He died within the hour. I've tried contacting her to find out what reason she had for giving my baby any opioid at all, let alone one so concentrated when he was taken there because he was so suddenly dehydrated and weakened. He didn't even need an opioid injection for anything. We're still in shock. And we're not even allowed the right to ask the doctor who is responsible...no. Instead a process manager contacts you.....true compassion. And to think we paid them almost $1,100 for that fateful visit.

We had our 1st visit today for our dog Cass. Of all the pet clinics we've been to here in KY, this was by far the best. They were very pleasant, thorough with their treatment plan as well as answering any questions we had. They also took the time to help our pup Cass feel comfortable with them. We will certainly be continuing to see them for him as well as our other two fur babies (Mocha & Charlie).

These people are beyond insane. We took our dog in with a split ear to get bandaged, and they put the stickiest tape in the universe directly on his ear. When we went to redress the wound it was completely impossible to remove. I took him back the next morning (with no appointment obviously) for them to fix it and they had to use adhesive remover to get the tape off, then tried to just hand the dog back to me with his ear open and bleeding. Luckily I brought my own gauze and tape to try and re-bandage it myself, in the room with the guy - who is the owner's son I believe. It was not until I started doing this that any sort of help was even offered to get the ear covered back up so blood wouldn't go everywhere when he shakes his head. Finally after that, they offered to actually redress the wound again - brought him back in and the ear was already free and out of the wrap they put on. They called ME INCOMPETENT for not having ADHESIVE REMOVER for their shoddy bandaging on hand, after providing no instructions or caution after they butchered his bandaging the day before, AND tried to charge me for "materials used", some tiny amount of gauze and tape. I was then told I would need to pay full price for the visit and would not be allowed to return until I did so. Obviously I will not be returning, and you shouldn't either.
