How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Santa Barbara Animal Hospital
Preventive care
Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.
Compare prescription pricing
Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.
Consider pet insurance
Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

Dr. Alexander and her staff have been wonderful! My husband and I changed veterinarians to Dr. Alexander after receiving bad service from our previous veterinarian. The staff was great in requesting our dogs' records be transferred from our old veterinarian to Santa Barbara Animal Hospital, made it seamless for my dogs to become new patients with their office! We are pleased with Santa Barbara Animal Hospital. Our dogs never have to wait more than 10 to 15 minutes to be seen. Our previous veterinarian would have us waiting for hours before our dogs could be seen or treated. Our male Westie Simon, needed a dental cleaning, blood work was needed due to Simon is a senior dog. Once he was cleared, they did an excellent job cleaning his teeth. He no longer has tartar built up on his back teeth and his teeth are now white and clean. Also, Simon has to have monthly allergy injections. Nice to take him in, the technician gives him his injection and we are in and out in 10 minutes. I could go on regarding my other two dogs but am running out of space. Thank you

Staff is always pleasant. My boy doesn't freak out when he has to go... and they cut his nails too. With that said and he still isn't scared, I'll be back.

I am extremely disappointed with the level of care my 4-year-old dog received from Dr. Terri Alexander. She assumed my dog had chronic kidney failure based solely on a BUN value and sent us home with subcutaneous fluids, basically telling me “let’s see how long we can keep her kidneys going.” No urgency, no thorough explanation, and no recommendation for additional testing I had to call and push for that myself. Meanwhile, my dog was getting worse at home. As a pet owner, you trust your vet to provide all available options and proper diagnostic steps, especially with something as serious as kidney failure. That did not happen here. I was given a life altering diagnosis with no confirmation and no real plan. Thankfully, I took my dog to an emergency clinic for a second opinion. They immediately provided IV fluids, B12 injections, and supportive care. Within just 2 days, my dog showed significant improvement—she’s eating, alert, and acting like herself again not fully recovered but making a lot of progress. Turns out, she did NOT have chronic kidney failure—she had a bacterial infection. Had I followed the original advice and “waited it out,” things could have gotten much worse. This experience was not only unprofessional but potentially dangerous. I strongly encourage other pet owners to seek a second opinion when something doesn’t feel right.

I called on a Saturday with concerns for my cat. They had an opening, got me in right away. The staff was very polite and the vet got my cat back to his old self within hours. I appreciate how they treated me and my cat especially on a Saturday so close to closing time.

I continue to have good experiences now with my two cats and my dog that is currently receiving physical therapy. My dog is doing great, it’s obvious he is getting stronger. The Vet technician is the best! He understands animal behavior, he has a very calm approach and I couldn’t be happier with the service there. I took Ren in to have a cast made, I ended up paying much less than what was quoted , he was cooperative and they were able to get it done with a minor sedative. I trust them not to overcharge me. My dog is obviously comfortable with the staff so I’ll continue to take my animals to them. I’m happy with their care.
