How to Save Money at Northside Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We've been coming to Northside since we arrived in Waco in 2020, at the height of Covid. Even through those trying times they provided quality care to pets in need. We've continued with Northside because they are a great team of people who genuinely care about animals. We've experience both well care, emergency visits and bereavement, and each visit has been met with care and respect for the pets and the owners. There's a continuity in care b/c there's very low turnover in staff. The staff knows you and your pets. The Vets are professional, caring listeners who provide only the best for the animals at a reasonable price. I highly recommend Northside Animal hospital!!!❤️

I take my two dogs here, & we have been loving this clinic going on 5 years now. Their pricing is the best, I even recommended them to my parents who have cats and they say the same things. The staff is super welcoming, very polite, & professional. Our vet has fixed any concerns I had with my dogs over the years and I am overly pleased with this clinic!! I just had a sudden urge to leave them a review because they absolutely deserve it! I catch myself bragging about them often. Side note: if your dog has allergies, this is the clinic who I’ll find out what’s best for your dog!!! We tried everything & they figured it out w both of my babies. Clean, fast, and always available when I call.

We chose this clinic after a recommendation from family after we moved into the area. We have had two wellness visits and one emergency visit and all the staff have been incredibly helpful. During the emergency, my little dog was admitted and ended up with abdominal surgery. They kept me informed as they went through the day and he was able to come home that night. They called daily afterwards to check on him for almost 2 weeks which I have never had a clinic do before. It was wonderful to know they were concerned and it was great to get daily input on what to do for his recovery. I can’t recommend them enough!

Update:5/5/2026 Wonderful as usual! Our family loves Dr. Cox...he is very special to us. Daisy Mae will always be his little patient. I do not think I have ever met such a kind person as Dr. Cox. He is knowledgeable and professional as well as down to earth with great sense of humour. The staff and techs are so nice and friendly with a gentle attitude when handling my sweet little babygirl. I cannot ever thank them enough. They have all been there when I needed comfort at two of the worst moments in my life. My Scooter (2011) and sweet Bella (2023) had to be put to sleep. Thank you Dr. Cox and staff for everything you do. 1st pic Daisy Mae 8 wks old (2025) 2nd pic Bella (2023) Next 3 pics Daisy Mae (2026) Scooter (2011) UPDATE: 4/24/2025 Dr. Cox is wonderful. He has been our babies vet for many years. He has always been compassionate when it came time to say goodbye to them. His care has been very important to us. I would not think of going to anyone else to help raise them healthy. His technician Mike is the best you could have to help Dr. Cox. They make an outstanding team. They were the two that helped my husband Randy and I say goodbye to our last baby Bella. It was a very difficult day and they both helped us get through this process of letting her go to Heaven. I will never forget how compassionate they were to us. How kind and gentle they were with our Bella. We now have a new baby Daisy Mae that has joined our family and we look forward to having these lovely people taking care of her health needs! Photos below: On left: New baby, Daisy Mae, 8 weeks. On right: Previous baby, Bella,15 years. We had to have our precious toy poodle, Bella put to sleep. She was 15 years old with a failing heart and other age related problems. She was suffering and no hope for a quality life. Our doctor there is Dr. Bruce Cox. He is the most wonderful, kind, sensitive doctor we have ever known. He was Bellas doctor from her 8 weeks to her last breath. I give this animal hospital and all their staff applause for being there when needed. For being their with advice when you are worried about your babies. I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. 💯 Photos below: On left: New baby, Daisy Mae, 8 weeks.
