How to Save Money at Animal Hospital at Thorndale

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Animal Hospital at Thorndale saved my dog. After we went to a well known emergency clinic twice (without resolution and misdiagnosis), we met with Dr. Java. Zeus was thoroughly examined and it was determined that his airway was compromised likely causing the core issues that he was experiencing. Surgery was performed promptly. Zeus was well looked after and the team has checked up on him numerous times. A week later, he is doing great! I can’t thank Dr. Java and team enough.

My plants, my puppy, and my peace of mind – found them all here! My 3-year-old Mini Labradoodle was struggling with septic gastroenteritis and bloody stools for a whole week. After being "burned" by other vets who gave me either a "money bomb" or mediocre results, I was skeptical. But stepping into this clinic felt like walking into my own home—it's a literal plant paradise! (As a plant lover, my heart was already won). But the real magic was the vet: her kindness, her patience, and her total transparency about costs so I wouldn't have a mini-heartbreak at the register. A week of shots and meds later, my baby is finally stable. I’ve already sent my friend here. If you love plants and hate overcharging, this is your sign!

Staff are friendly and love each animal that comes in the office door! We have been so impressed with the level of care for my senior dog. During his first appointment, the vet (UPenn graduate) gave a more thorough exam than I've ever seen before. Truly "hands on" to assess his arthritis. She suggested xrays but thoroughly explained why it would help, the cost, and how results would help plan the best treatment. The vet was very tuned into what my dog was feeling and was genuinely concerned.

BEST VET!! BEST VET!! BEST VET!! I feel very safe and confident bringing my animals here. I was in tears leaving the facility because they are just that wonderful. I started bringing my dogs here a few months ago and was blown away by the level of care, so I decided to try bringing my cat who hates vet visits, to see if they might be a better fit. At other places they man handled him in a separate room where I hear him screaming over and over, and they never helped clean him up after, whether he pooped or peed. I always left feeling like they hated him and had no time for him. BUT NOT HERE! They allowed me to choose where to evaluate him, and they did clean up after him!! They reassured me the whole way through and it was by far the best vet visit he has ever had. Everything about this place has made a wonderful impact on me and the lives of my animals. They really care about animals here. You will not be disappointed!

5/27/2026- I’m not saying if Chubbs went to the clinic, her outcome would’ve been different. I have learned that It’s hard to come back from cluster seizures. I’m just saying, please have your staff handle these distressed calls for help with a little bit more compassionate instead of just saying “you cannot bring him or her in because we’re closing”. Do You know how heartbreaking that can sound to somebody who is completely helpless in a Very devastating situation? If she had said anything else or try to give me some support over the phone. I am writing this message in utter devastation and fury over how my desperate call for help was treated on Friday, May 15, 2026, at 4:43 PM. Our beloved dog, Chubbs, was suffering through a terrifying seizure episode, and I felt utterly helpless as I reached out to your clinic for assistance. During my call, I was pleading for immediate help, clearly expressing the urgency of the situation. I could hear my dog in distress and asked if you could hear her too. I was assured that you could. Yet, when the receptionist returned after putting me on hold, I was met with an infuriatingly cold response: I was told to monitor her and take her to an emergency room if the seizures continued. When I begged to bring Chubbs in for immediate care, I was told that I couldn’t come because your clinic would be closing at 5 PM. In that moment, my heart shattered, and rage consumed me. I was sobbing uncontrollably, struggling to understand how your clinic's closing time could possibly outweigh the urgency of my suffering dog. I could have made it there by 4:50 at the latest, yet my desperate pleas were treated as if they were nothing but an inconvenience. **my call with your clinic** Me sobbing and begging “please please let me bring Chubbs in. I don’t know what to do for her and I have two young kids here. Your clinic “if she continues to seize being her to the ER (Blue Pearl in Malvern) Me “please! You are only 3 minutes away from me! Malvern is a good 20-30 minutes and it’s rush hour now! I just need her to feel calmer for the ride. Please help me” Your clinic “you can’t, sorry, we closing soon” Then I hung up on her. After that heart-wrenching call, we had to wait for Chubbs to calm down enough to get her into the car. Tragically, she suffered three more seizures during the ride—two in the carrier and one just as we were entering the emergency room. The sight of our precious baby being rushed away by the emergency staff, with them frantically shouting for medications and treatment permissions, will haunt me forever. I understand the severity of cluster seizures; I know that what Chubbs was experiencing was critical and there’s not much your clinic could have done to prevent the outcome of her passing. But I firmly believe that her suffering could have been alleviated had we been allowed to come to your clinic, even for a moment of care. So you can give her some thing to calm her down, enough for the ride to the BluePearl ER. Instead, the last hours of her life were filled with anguish and terror—not just for her, but for my entire family, including my two young children, who were left helpless and confused. I tried to explain to you that we will be at least 30 mins away and it’s also rush hour…. I am not upset because the vet couldn’t save her; I am furious that we were denied even a chance to help Chubbs find some comfort. I am convinced that if the vet had allowed us to come in, those additional seizures in the car could have been prevented. The cold indifference shown during such a critical moment is absolutely unacceptable. It felt as if your clinic's schedule, you clocking out on time, you making it for what ever dinner or after work plans were prioritized over the life of a suffering animal, and that thought infuriates me even more. I urge you to reflect deeply on how your policies impact those in desperate situations. No pet owner should ever have to endure the agony of being turned away when their beloved animal is in such distress.
