How to Save Money at Ponce De León Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I took my dog here from puppyhood to 3 years old consistently. This vet (Dr Perritt) is kind but completely passive. My poor dog had diarrhea for months and I kept taking him here to check his poop for parasites and they never thought to check for colitis or any other cause of chronic diarrhea. His new vet diagnosed the colitis in one visit. Never diagnosed his heart murmur that his new vet and vet at the emergency clinic both diagnosed in one visit. AND the tiny bumps on his skin that they didn’t do anything about turned out to be a fungus and went away with fungal shampoo in 3 days, again treated by his new vet. Your dog’s ailments will be brushed off at this clinic. I thought since it was a fancy expensive coral gables vet I’d be getting the best care but that was far from the case. My recommendation is to stay away. I’m upset my dog suffered needlessly for years due to this vet’s passivity.

Very professional and caring staff! Dr Emily Perritt is incredibly patient and knowledgeable. Truly fantastic service all around from the whole team. My family brings their dogs here as well and have only had excellent experiences!

This clinic is filled with the kindest people. My family has had two dogs visiting here for 25 years. Our second dog, Bella had to be put down after a long life. I can’t imagine a more compassionate team during my time grieving and all that they were able to do to help us out over the course our dog’s lives. I know when I’m ready for my next dog I will be returning.

Dr. Tonarely and the team at Ponce de Leon Animal Clinic have cared for our pets—past and present—with genuine compassion and dedication. Every visit reminds me how lucky we are to have such a caring veterinarian. The staff is friendly, patient, and never makes you feel rushed. My pets always receive exceptional care, and I wouldn’t trust anyone else. Highly recommended.

In 2021, after living in Miami for about a year, I brought my dog Picasso to this clinic for a routine checkup. He was only five years old at the time, and I simply wanted to make sure everything was okay. Based on their recommendation, they performed what they called a “senior checkup,” including bloodwork, which I thought was premature for his age but agreed to anyway. Three days later, the vet called me. The call was brief, cold, and lacked any compassion. I was told that Picasso was in renal failure, that he had a short life expectancy, and that the only thing I could do was feed him a very specific prescription kidney diet for the rest of his life. I was devastated and in shock. I had many questions, but the conversation was extremely limited and provided very little explanation or support. Trusting my instincts, I immediately sought a second opinion from my longtime vet in Fort Lauderdale. They repeated the bloodwork, and the results came back completely different. There was no indication of renal failure. This was an enormous relief, but also deeply concerning given the severity of the original diagnosis. Today, Picasso is 11 years old, thriving, full of energy, and living a rich, active life. He travels with me, plays daily, and shows none of the symptoms or decline I was told to expect. Had I not pursued a second opinion, I would have been living under the belief that he was terminally ill. I was also uncomfortable with the clinic’s approach to scheduling care. Vaccinations and routine services were spread across multiple separate visits, each requiring its own exam fee. In contrast, my longtime vet handles routine care in a more consolidated and efficient way, which feels more respectful of both the pet and the owner. My experience here was deeply upsetting, and I would strongly encourage any pet owner to seek a second opinion when receiving a serious diagnosis. It made all the difference for my dog.
