How to Save Money at Viscaya Prado Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Took my maltipoo, Nova Penelope, to this clinic today following three months of antibiotics for a UTI at a neighboring veterinary clinic, only to find out that antibiotics were never going to work long-term because she, in fact, has a large mass in her bladder that needs removed via surgery. The other clinic never even did an X-ray and just kept prescribing new antibiotics and having me pay for additional urine testings even though we already completed a culture and knew exactly the type of antibiotic Nova’s bacteria is susceptible to. I digress, Dr. Freed and his team were kind, patient, empathetic, informative, and absolutely incredible. Dr. Freed walked me through the process every step of the way, educated me on determining abdomen masses, and reviewed my pet’s charts and results with me at length. They were so incredibly gentle and patient with my poor girl who was frightened and shaking, they right away got her to relax and feel more comfortable. Never in my life have I received such caring, tentative, amazing service from a Veterinary clinic — and I will never go anywhere else! Thank you SO MUCH Viscaya-Prado Veterinary Hospital team for making a challenging afternoon a little less painful, for being so supportive and kind to a perfect stranger, and for all that you do each and every day for other pet parents like me going through a tough time. You’re greatly appreciated!

My dads cat has a uti and other vets did not have availability. My mom called this vet and they got her in within the hour. They offered help, we're all very friendly and it was affordable. They're very thankful for their help and will go to them again for future vet care.

I was at Del Prado location this past March. I had got my German Shepherd back that was missing. He was in bad shape. Fleas, bruising & scabs inside back legs & belly area, & ear mites. I took pics & treated his ears right away. Took him to vet with no appointment. Since I’ve been a client for my other fur baby, they know me. I am so, so grateful for all the staff. They are cautious with big dogs, as they should be. I know shepherds and you need to sometimes not turn your back on them or trust them. I’m very grateful for the staff and the Care that they have for my for baby pets. Dr. Kroll & his associates took very good care of my Shepherd & me as I was reunited with my dog after a year of being gone. After a couple weeks on antibiotics I noticed his fur wasn’t getting better. Made a phone call that afternoon to vet office- left a message for Dr Feed (who my pets usually see) of my concerns & questions. Dr. Freed called back early next morning & was detailed with the meds & how my dog was only couple weeks in on antibiotics & the topical I picked up & the help. Dr. Freed was on point with it being Skin Mites all from a pic I sent to their email. My shepherd is much happier, & moving around better- healing. We are blessed. I highly recommend this group of veterinarians. Thank you to all at Viscaya Prado Vet.🫵🏼👍🏼🦮🐾🦴🙏🎉

Recently, I had the very difficult decision to put my dog Lily down, as she fought congestion heart failure and finally kidney failure. As with anyone ,who truly loves and cares for their family pets, it was devastating. My cats and dogs have long experienced the Great care, genuine compassion , and knowledgable guidance from Dr. Schumann. To say she is outstanding and truly has the passion, love, and knowledge to be a Vet is an understatement. She not only guided me thru the care of my Lily and her illness, but her knowledge and very helpful, gentle attention, and experience helped Lily live a quality of life which may not have been possible. Her patience, empathy, and love of animals is outstanding. Her communication is wonderful , for me, to be educated on what was going on with Lily made all the difference! My heart will be forever grateful, that SHE made an unbearable task, bearable, knowing I had made the right choice for the one that mattered Lily! Thank you Dr. Schumann, I am blessed and grateful for you!💜 I also do not want to forget to Thank Jess, her Vet tech,as she was truly wonderful, kind and impressive with her dedication and experience. Last but never least, is Linda at the office front desk. Thank you for all you do. Always kind, listens, and truly cares !
