How to Save on Veterinary Costs at VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital

Preventive care

Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.

Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

I don't normally leave reviews but my cat was only 2 years old when he passed because of the negligence of one of the vets at VCA Hollywood Animal Hospital. In the beginning of April my cat started urinating blood, I called the VCA Hollywood location for advice and they told me to rush him in, that it was urgent. I did exactly that and brought my cat in approximately 30 mins later around 10 pm. Once my cat was admitted, he did a lot of blood work, ultrasound, and even X-ray scans just in case. The vet (Maria Mercado) told my husband and I that he had "the good crystals" and will easily pass with the medication that they provided us with but we would have to wait until the blood work results come in to have the full picture. There was no other options suggested by the vet so she sent us home. The next following days we called multiple times throughout the day to get his results and it wasn't until 3 days later that we got the results which was a UTI and the medication they provided should continue but nothing more needed. We asked for more blood work because she didn't seem too confident if the ultrasound images showed any concern and again, it took us approximately 3 days to get the results after calling throughout the days. It was always "she's not in the office" or "she's busy with another patient" which is understandable but if this was so urgent that you had me rush him in to the ER day 1, you would imagine getting the results quickly to act quickly would be the same energy and why couldn't anyone else read us the results either? 20 days later after finishing his medication, we had to rush him into the ER again, we returned to the same location because they had his most recent medical records. By the time we arrived, he was in critical condition, barely breathing, blood results were off the charts and had to have emergency surgery as soon as they regulated his kidney. They informed me that he had a urinary blockage due to the crystals that weren't flushed out. We hadn't know that was even an option, we would've done it in a heartbeat. The new doctor informed me that there is essentially no such thing as "good crystals" and I should've been provided the option to have them removed but unfortunately the damage was too great and my cat Shadow (2 years old) passed away that night. I am extremely upset because I am not a veterinarian and I trust in what is being told to me as the best action of treatment. I am not sure if she was just tired and wanted us to go home or what the reason was but if she would've taken the time to fully review or provide us with options, we wouldn't be here today. So I am writing this review to share my experience and I hope that this never happens to anyone else due to her negligence. On the positive side, the second vet (David Driggs) and the technician (unfortunately did not get his name) were extremely kind, compassionate and gave me all the information upfront whether it was good or bad news. I appreciated the level of effort that they put in to try to save my baby and I will forever remember them for being empathetic to me on one of the saddest days of my life.

We had the best experience with Dr. Zapata and the team! This was our first visit, and from the moment we walked in, everyone was so friendly and welcoming. Dr. Zapata is truly amazing..so gentle, kind, and clearly a cat lover. She made Leo feel comfortable right away, and you can tell she genuinely cares about her patients. Leo absolutely loved her, which says everything! The vet tech, Kayla, was also wonderful/very knowledgeable, patient, and kind throughout the entire visit. She really knew what she was doing and made us feel at ease. Overall, such a great experience. We felt so well taken care of, and it means a lot to find a team you can trust with your pet. We will definitely be coming here from now on!

If you’re looking for a veterinarian who truly goes above and beyond, I can’t recommend Dr. Lauren Vezzosi at VCA enough. From the very first visit, Dr. Vezzosi has shown an incredible level of compassion, professionalism, and genuine care. You can tell right away that this isn’t just a job—it’s a passion. Every question is answered thoughtfully, every concern is taken seriously, and every decision is made with both the pet and the family in mind. What really stands out is the way Dr. Vezzosi blends medical expertise with kindness. There’s a calm, reassuring presence that makes even the most stressful situations feel manageable. You never feel rushed, and you always leave with a clear understanding of what’s going on and what the next steps are. It’s rare to find someone who treats your pet like their own, but that’s exactly what you get here. Truly grateful to have Dr. Vezzosi in our corner. Highly, highly recommend.
