How to Save Money at Parkdale Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Recently moved to Parkdale Animal Hospital. Everyone was so friendly and attentive to my Charley. Dr Steph is so knowledgeable of my boy’s condition and I am happy she will continue this journey with me. I love the app to keep me organized and the MyVet Store making it easy to order food. So glad to be part of this kind and friendly team.

We were a little nervous taking our cat to the vet for the first time (she's still pretty new to the whole "being a pet" thing, we weren't sure how she'd react.) But from the minute we walked in, we knew Duckie was in excellent hands. The space was open and inviting, and everyone was so friendly and helpful. Having a cat only exam room is so considerate. It's hard to explain, but to me, seeing details like that get accounted for speaks to a really high standard of care. Dr. Johnathan was knowledgeable and approachable, and took the time to make sure we weren't overwhelmed. His bedside manner for both pets and people is awesome! Her name is eluding me, but the veterinary assistant was really wonderful with Duckie. We also sincerely appreciate the transparency policy. In the past, I've had experiences with more traditional practices where I wasn't allowed to see or know about certain procedures. Knowing that isn't the case here is incredibly reassuring. Finally, we're both still so impressed with the nail trimming. We'd barely mentioned asking if it was possible, and the clippers were already out. What we had failed to do in 6 months was over in 5 minutes, and it was like witnessing magic. TL;DR, we had an excellent first vet visit, and are grateful to the awesome team at Parkdale!

Had an emergency & needed to get our cat in. It was a weekday morning, so emergency vet did not seem necessary, our vet at the time could not see him for days. Called & they saw him within 30 minutes of calling. We now call Parkdale Animal Hospital our veterinary clinic! The receptionists were great to start, Dr. Laura was so thorough, took her time to explain & break down costs & options, the vet techs and all the staff from morning to night that we met were all 5 stars! I love that there was no pressure, they worked with our budget, they were so great with our cat as he is prone to anxiety & had no issues there! They even let him keep his butterfly with him while he was there for the day. The bill was what they said it would be. They followed up with emails like they said they would & have been super supportive with post visit items like dietary changes. Thank you!

Today was my first visit to this vet clinic, and I had the absolute best experience. All the staff were incredibly warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable, and they were very good with my little kitten. The vet student, Sarah, was the highlight of my visit. She was very helpful in answering the questions I had, and she was incredibly pleasant to both me and my cat. Following my visit, she sent me an email thoroughly detailing all of the information we covered in the appointment, which was super great to have record of. I look forward to bringing him back to this clinic again in the future.

I have been dealing with Jonothan Uyede for many years. He is a very caring Vet. He also has an amazing team that helped Jax get through a very hard operation. Jill talked with us for hours guiding us to make the right decision for our little Westie. Thanks you Jill. Everyone at the front desk were very nice and Dr Steph and Dr Mackay all pitched in to get jax peach stone out of his body.He went in on Monday and they operated and had him back in our arms Monday night. Meagan did have a good plan for jaxs recovery unfortunately he didn’t want to eat as was expected. But now is doing better. Thank you so much everyone that helped with his recovery
