How to Save Money at Gulf Shore Veterinary Specialty Surgery

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very easy to schedule an appt. They took us in pretty quickly for a broken hip surgery. The staff was friendly, caring, very professional. Dr Young came out to speak w me before the surgery and explained everything he was going to do. The whole team was great to work with, the surgery went well and my kitty is recovering well. Not on a cheaper side, but definitely is worth it ( they have options available such as Care credit , thank goodness 😅). My kitty 🐱 loves her blankie (gift after the surgery). Thank you 🙏 for taking a great care of my baby.

10/10 recommend Gulf Shore Veterinary Speciality Surgery!!! We adopted our dog a few months ago, we noticed he was favoring his back legs. Was referred to Gulf Shore by a local Vet, from the first call we have been impressed. Total cost up front(quoted a price and it didn’t change!), prompt appointments with close follow ups! Jasper had both hips and his right knee operated on. We are 4 weeks post op and he is now walking better than before he had surgery! From the staff at the front desk, the vet tech to the Surgeon , I can’t express my gratitude enough!!! He especially loves his special blanket he was sent home with! Thank you Gulf Shore Veterinary Speciality Surgery for giving Jasper back his ability to walk!!! For a 12 month old pup he will be forever grateful! One more thing, I wanted to give a shout out to the front desk staff who on our first appt noted Jasper had difficulties walking, especially on the laminate floor, provided Jasper with a large blanket so he could be more comfortable!

Dr Young and staff took phenomenal care of my 195lb pup that needed TPLO surgery. The follow up calls exceeded our expectations. I met a few other clients, like myself, who travelled hours to render their services. Highly recommended with zero regrets. Thank you everyone.

For the level of care they provide there is invaluable. They are patient, caring and helpful with any and all questions. They also provided me multiple resources that the previous surgery center never offered when Beanie had his first operation. If your big 100lb+ dog needs a TPLO ACL operation, this is the place to go.

I appreciate that Dr. Young diagnosed my dog’s knee problem correctly. I appreciate that he seems like a really good guy with the best of intentions for my dog. And as far as I know he did the (significant) surgery properly on my dog. However my dog is still lame on that problematic leg 13 weeks after the procedure (which should not be the case for this procedure). I have since taken my dog to another vet surgeon in a much larger market, for another opinion, who said I should have been giving my dog physical therapy throughout the last 7 or 8 weeks of the recovery period. Dr. Young never once mentioned physical therapy at any of our 4 or 5 follow up appointment as my dog was struggling with the healing process throughout that 10 week period of post-op appointments. I’m glad we tried the surgery but I’m not sure my dog is any better for it, I just wish I would’ve known I should’ve been doing physical therapy on her.
