How to Save Money at Main Street Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our experience with Main Street Animal Hospital with the staff and Dr.Murphy was incredible. We had to make the hard decision that unfortunately many pet owners face. They are compassionate and caring. The flowers we received from them the following day for our loss was completely unexpected and very much appreciated. I highly recommend taking your four legged family member to them. Thank you for all you did for us during our time of grief.

I moved down here from Ohio and I was so nervous to find a new vet due to bad past experiences but after researching a few vets Main Street Animal Hospital put all my worries to rest. The entire staff is beyond lovely. The front desk girls are so friendly and quick to help. The nurse that helped us was so patient and kind with answering all my extensive questions regarding my cat. Even giving me a price breakdown towards different treatment plans to make it affordable. I even called in to ask a quick question about some medication my cat received and the Doctor himself was the one to call me back. You can tell they truly care about every pet walking in and they will treat your baby like it’s their own. If you’re in need of a new vet clinic it would be a mistake to go anywhere else. To the entire staff, Sansa and I thank you!

Chewy went to Main Street all his life. Dr. Master is great as is all the staff there. When it was time for Chewy to cross the bridge they were kind and compassionate, as they always have been. They even sent a sympathy bouquet to the family. They are excellent!

Great fair place to take your animals with a knowledgeable and caring staff. Thanks to them it is making it easier and gentler to watch our cat deal with kidney disease as she finishes her journey. Appreciate them very much.

Words can not fully express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Greg Masters and his exceptional team at Main Street Animal Hospital in Dunedin for saving the life of my beloved Jingles, who is truly like a son to me. Their skill and compassion made all the difference, and I’m forever thankful! On Tuesday night, Jingles woke us at 2:00 a.m., clearly in pain with stomach issues. We later learned he’d swallowed objects around the house without us noticing. We took him to our local vet, where X-rays confirmed the problem. That night, we rushed him to an animal ER for advanced scans to diagnose his condition and determine if surgery was needed. The ER surgeon, however, wasn’t confident in handling the case and advised us to find a highly skilled specialist to save Jingles’ life. I’ve known Dr. Greg Masters as a friend and trusted Veterinarian for nearly 20 years. I called his office, explained the urgent situation, and they immediately connected me with Dr. Masters. Even in the middle of his own dental appointment, he called me back, calm and focused, asking for details. He told me to bring Jingles to his office right away so he could assess the situation. I arrived just before he did, and when Dr. Masters walked in, his determination and professionalism were unmistakable. He quickly reviewed Jingles’ case and reassured me, “We’re going to take care of your boy.”His team performed additional scans to get a clear picture of the issue, then explained the surgery plan with confidence and clarity. They sent us home to wait for updates, and those four to five hours felt endless as we hoped for good news. When Dr. Masters personally called, his voice carried the relief we’d been waiting for: the surgery was a complete success!! I knew Jingles was in the best hands, and Dr. Masters’ expertise proved it. Jingles may be a handful at times, but he’s family, and I’d do anything to keep him with us. Dr. Greg Masters and his incredible team at Main Street Animal Hospital in Dunedin didn’t just perform a surgery—they gave us our boy back!  I’m deeply grateful for their dedication, skill, and care, and I’ll always be indebted to them for saving my boy Jingles’ life!
