How to Save Money at Animal Hospital of Dunedin

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I was referred to Dr Olsen and Dr Caputo at Dunedin by a fellow vet tech who knew I was interested in integrative medicine for my recently diagnosed soul dog, Dixie. She was diagnosed with Acute Leukemia, which has a very short life expectancy (2 months or less). We knew we wanted to try anything to make her as comfortable as possible. Dr Olsen was amazing! Her approach to Dixie’s condition was well thought out and analyzed and I found it so interesting to see acupuncture and supplementing traditional Chinese veterinary medicine. As a vet professional, I find it encouraging and heart lifting to see other vet professionals showing the same care and drive to help animals in times of need. The techs and CSRs were extremely nice and I enjoyed seeing them when we visited for our appointments as well! We also did a consult with Dr Caputo for ozone therapy and I highly recommend her too! We talked and went through Dixie’s bloodwork and results to figure out if this was the best option for her at the time. Unfortunately, the cancer was highly aggressive and we did not get to finish our acupuncture treatments but I do feel like it made her feel better. I will definitely be coming back if I need it in the future for my other dog - and I live across the bridge in Bradenton. Thank you everyone for making us feel welcomed and cared for while here. Dixie really enjoyed coming and she was always so happy in the car ride over. But now she is pain free and running around in heaven

Honestly the best place and the best people. My cat has had some health problems including FIP when he was a baby, so I have to take him in often, The doctors and staff are incredible. Dr. Olson is amazing and always takes the time to answer all questions and lay out all possible options. Everyone is very kind and caring. I have never had a bad experience.

Been coming to this vet for 13 years and very happy with the care received. Dr. Sandra is our favorite, I’m sure they are all great but we ended up having a great experience so we stick with her now! Helped my girl out a lot, thought she was just getting old but turns out she was in pain and had kidney stones! Due to her great assessment and actively listening to the complaints, she was able to literally fix my cat and likely added many years into her life with some simple lifestyle changes! We chose this place for distance and now we moved but continue to come bc Dr. Sandra!

My experience with Dr Sandy and the staff was superb. The Dr. took the time to let my pet get comfortable with her. She was interested in what was going on and not about how much money they could make. I liked that they have a pharmacy in house. I would highly recommend them if you are looking for great care
