How to Save Money at Broward Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My rabbit was very sick and my regular exotic vet couldn’t fit us in for a same day appointment, so they referred me to Broward Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital. My bunny was able to be seen by Dr. Kelleher immediately as an emergency visit, which cost $150, but that was fine with me, as he was in desperate need of vet care. He was hospitalized for three nights and thankfully, thanks to Dr. Kelleher’s care and same day emergency appointment, he survived!! The office is lovely, bright, and clean, conveniently located, and lots of parking. All employees that I interacted with were pleasant. We just had our follow-up visit and my bunny’s blood values are all normal! Thank you, Dr. Kelleher for saving our rabbit with your prompt care and hospitalization.

Took our Chico, guinea pig, in for his first visit. The staff and vet were so personable! The office is quaint and clean. It was good visit, his check up went well and they trimmed his nails. He squealed just a little. They had rabbit for adoption.

I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this clinic. We paid over $1,200 for our parrot’s treatment and received some of the worst customer service I have experienced in the United States. Our bird was hospitalized overnight and was scheduled to be discharged on Saturday. The clinic closes at 2:00 PM on Saturdays. I arrived at 10:00 AM to pick him up because my son had an important graduation ceremony at 1:30 PM that day. I explained multiple times to the staff that I absolutely needed to leave in time for my child’s ceremony. Despite this, I waited for over two hours. Every 15 minutes, I approached the reception desk asking for an update and politely requesting that my bird be brought out so I could leave. Each time I was told, “just a little longer,” but nothing happened. By noon, I was becoming increasingly concerned because I still had not received my bird, and I needed to drive to my son’s graduation. We even suggested that the doctor email us the medical information later if necessary because we were running out of time. Our concerns were repeatedly ignored. When we finally became more insistent after waiting for hours, a receptionist suddenly started crying. Dr. Susan then came out and began yelling at us in front of everyone, accusing us of upsetting the receptionist. Instead of addressing the situation professionally, she raised her voice, slammed doors, and created a scene in the clinic. The reality is that we were simply asking for our bird to be released after waiting for more than two hours while repeatedly explaining that we were about to miss an important milestone in our child’s life. This was not the first issue. On a previous visit, I was forced to wait so long that I was over two hours late picking up my children from school, despite repeatedly explaining that nobody else could pick them up. Now, to make matters worse, weeks have passed since additional testing was performed. I have sent messages asking about the results, and I have received no response. We were told that communication would continue by email, yet my messages have been ignored. I understand that veterinary medicine can be busy and emergencies happen. However, there is no excuse for repeatedly ignoring clients, failing to communicate, making them wait for hours without updates, and then yelling at them when they are understandably frustrated. After spending over $1,200, I expected professionalism, communication, and basic respect. Unfortunately, I received none of those things. I would not return to this clinic, nor would I recommend it to others.

My daughter has watched every episode of Dr. K's show and loves watching her and the staff care for these exotic animals. So when my wife took a chance and called the hospital to see if there was a way for us to have Sydney meet the doctor and they happily invited us to visit, it was a battle to keep it a secret for a week! The staff knew who she was and greeted her as we walked in (walking in without an animal may have given us away) which was sweet. Dr K came out and couldn't have been more kind and gracious. She hugged Sydney right away and basically interviewed her. She was so generous with her time and I'm certain that it's an experience that Sydney will remember (hopefully through veterinary school and beyond!). Thank you to Dr K and all the staff at Broward Avian & Exotic Animal Hospital for making my little girl's birthday special!!

Broward Avian and Exotic did an exceptional job performing a double ear surgery (ablation) on our rabbit to treat an infection. The surgery cost $2000, which is a lot to spend on a rabbit but also fairly reasonable considering the extent of the surgery and the high cost of veterinary surgeries. With that in mind, the staff seem to be extremely scattered and overwhelmed. One day the desk temporarily “lost” our rabbit because it wasn’t communicated that she was being brought into the exam room. Dr. K also did not communicate that the surgery given would cause our rabbit permanent deafness and that she would need regular post operative care (regular ear flushing with iodine) for the rest of her life UNTIL my husband and I asked explicitly. Many other pet owners may not know what to ask and it’s important to know what you are signing up for with surgery. It also took her a long time to recover back to normal and we were not prepared for how helpless/dizzy she was for the first month after surgery. We have also not been able to get a hold of Dr. K to answer follow-up questions despite sending four separate emails. Wait times can be over an hour after your scheduled appointment time. It really seems that they need another vet to help manage the number of patients they treat. They seem to be doing their best with limited resources and an abundance of animals in need of care.
