How to Save Money at Okaloosa Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

UPDATE: I previously left a glowing review for this clinic because I had always had good experiences here, but unfortunately my most recent experience has completely changed how I feel. I booked my dog’s appointment over 6 months ago specifically to have an oral mass excised because it has continued to increase in size. The day before his procedure, I asked for an estimate and was surprised when the treatment plan I received was primarily for a dental cleaning with possible extractions. The mass excision, which was the entire reason this appointment was booked, wasn’t even included on the original estimate. After I questioned it, the treatment plan was revised. I was also confused by the extraction charges because I had never been told my dog needed any teeth extracted. When I asked, I was told they wouldn’t know whether any extractions were necessary until dental X-rays were performed during the cleaning. I ultimately decided I wanted to proceed with the mass excision without the additional dental services. At 4:41 PM the evening before his scheduled procedure, I received a call telling me his appointment was being canceled. The receptionist told me Dr. Conrad did not feel it was “worth it” to do the mass excision without the dental cleaning and offered to schedule another appointment for Dr. Conrad to evaluate him again. What makes this especially concerning to me is the estimate I received. The revised treatment plan listed the epulis excision at $11, while the dental cleaning was $669–$735.90 and potential extractions added $317–$517. I understand that these dental services may be recommended and that the extraction charges were included in case X-rays showed they were necessary. My issue is not that additional treatment was recommended. My issue is that after I declined hundreds of dollars in additional dental services, the procedure I had scheduled more than 6 months ago was suddenly not “worth it” to perform by itself, and my appointment was canceled less than 24 hours beforehand. I can’t speak to the reasoning behind that decision, but given the significant difference in cost between the excision listed on the estimate and the additional dental services, the way this was handled does not sit right with me. If the dental cleaning was medically necessary in order for the mass excision to be performed, that should have been clearly communicated when the appointment was scheduled. Instead, I waited more than 6 months for an appointment to address a growing mass, only to have it canceled the evening before and be told I could schedule another appointment for him to be evaluated again. I’m extremely disappointed because I previously trusted this clinic and spoke very highly of them. I completely understand a veterinarian recommending what they believe is best for my dog, but I also expect clear communication and transparency—especially before waiting more than 6 months for a procedure.

I highly recommend Okaloosa Animal Clinic! Dr. Conrad is very thorough and always provides great detail about whatever the reason for the visit may be. The staff is always friendly, and I've never had to sit and wait in the waiting room when I arrive on time for my appointments. I am thankful to have such a great vet here locally to care for my pets.
