I wish I'd discovered Small Door sooner. From the moment Fitz and I arrived—when the front desk poured and carefully stirred his water because dogs shouldn't drink ice-cold water in the heat—to the second we left with his tail wagging, this was the best veterinary experience I've ever had. Dr. Colleen Roarty and Sierra took exceptional care with Fitz. They were thorough, attentive, and genuinely kind. When Fitz came in with an eye issue, they didn't just address it; they conducted a full workup, including a heart check—something especially important for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels like him. Sierra took the time to show me exactly how to clean his ears at home, not just tell me. What stood out most was the transparency. Small Door pulled up the pricing on-screen and walked me through every charge without any of the opacity I've heard about from other practices. No surprises, no pressure—just clear, honest communication. The post-visit debrief was a model of clarity: a concise, easy-to-read PDF I could forward straight to my parents (who, like all parents, always ask for the details). That attention to follow-up care matters. Fitz's comfort and health come first for me. Small Door made it clear they feel the same way. Highly recommend.

I’ve been going to this Vet at this location for 2 1/2 years with my now 11-year-old yellow lab. Pros: -Great transparency, I always know how much everything is going to cost in advance -Amazing communication, they always respond within 10 minutes. You can call them email them or text them. -Their app has saved me thousands of dollars anytime something goes wrong or I notice something on my dog. I can message them immediately and they respond which has saved me many trips to the emergency vet. -Quality of care is unmatched. Every single vet, tech and doctor gives you the feeling that you are the only patient they’ll talk to you forever. They are so detailed and kind and clearly love pets very much. -I’ve been to two locations and they’re all always very clean and have a bunch of treats and beverages Cons: -Sometimes there’s no appointments for two or three days at my preferred location. However, whenever it’s been an emergency, they have squeezed me in. Also, they have many other locations in the city so if you have a car, you can pretty much always get a same-day appointment. -It’s expensive, but as far as I can tell, it’s on par with every other option in the area. I did get their membership and I’m not really sure if it’s resulted in any savings, but I use their app enough that it’s worth it. Personal experience: My dog had a surgery with Dr. Jillian Schrier this week. He Had a dental cleaning four years ago at a different vet and it went very poorly and their recovery was really tough. I shared my concerns with the practice when they recommended my dog needed another cleaning and they gave me three different Levels of care they can offer to deal with my concerns (Anesthesia), Then the doctor also talked to me multiple times on the phone to walk through the plan, why this time was going to go differently, and provide updates day-of surgery of how things we’re going. she really put my concerns at ease and made sure that the experience would be entirely different for the surgery, which led to amazing results because my dog is recovering wonderfully.

I’m leaving a review specifically for Dr. Roarty & her assistant Cierra. Finding a veterinarian who is confident, compassionate, and knowledgeable (especially when you have a reactive dog) isn’t always easy, but this team exceeded every expectation. From the moment I walked in, the front desk staff was incredibly kind, understanding, and patient. They took the time to listen to my concerns, understood my dog’s situation, and made us feel comfortable right away. The veterinary team was absolutely outstanding. They were completely unfazed by my reactive dog and handled him with such calm confidence and genuine care that it immediately put me at ease. It was obvious they have extensive experience working with dogs of all temperaments. They also welcomed my other dog into the exam room, even though she wasn’t there for an appointment, which was such a thoughtful gesture and made the visit so much easier for me. I never felt rushed. The veterinarian listened carefully to the reason for my visit, answered my questions thoroughly, and demonstrated a level of competence and professionalism that gave me complete confidence in their recommendations. Despite the quality of care, we were still in and out in a very reasonable amount of time. It’s rare to find a veterinary office where every member of the team, from the front desk to the medical staff, works together to create such a positive experience. I left feeling heard, respected, and confident that my dogs are in excellent hands. I highly recommend this clinic to anyone, especially those with reactive or anxious pets.

My girls love coming here, the staff are all so sweet and provide ample treats! They are clear on pricing, don’t push for extra or unnecessary services, keep the space very clean and efficiently run. Making appointments is always an easy process, often with same day available, and rescheduling is equally painless. Super happy with my experience here and recommend to anyone in need of a caring, efficient and friendly vet!

Since moving to DC a bit over a year ago I have been bringing my 5 year old mini schnauzer Stormi to Small Door in Navy Yard. Staff is lovely and patient with my dog you can tell they truly care. They always follow up to check on her and are willing to help out as much as they can! Love it!
