How to Save Money at Houston Spay Neuter

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Thank you so much to the wonderful Doctors, technicians, and receptionists at Houston Spay and Neuter. My sweet rescue Mustard had a bleeding foot and they got me in for an appointment the same day. They made him so comfortable and had him purring like crazy. He didn’t have the best visit at the last veterinary practice and his visit with HSN was a complete 180. I’m so thankful to all of the staff members there and how thoughtful and thorough they are. I appreciate everything you wonderful people do for those that rescue, foster, and care for the animals in the Houston area. You all are truly an amazing group of genuinely fantastic people. Thank you for caring for Mustard and calming my anxious mind.

This place saved my pet and bank account. I found a wounded kitten on the freeway that needed an emergency amputation as this whole paw was cut off and full of necrosis. Calling vets and asking for recommendations of where to go, I was quoted from $6k-$10 minimum just for the amputation, not including vet visit or medication costs. I lost hope and cried thinking this innocent kitten was going to die. I thought " this can't possibly be right, that's enough money to buy a car, that would put me into debt" And again, multiple places had these insane prices, and when asking for advice on where else to go, they told me there were no other options cheaper. They lied. I went to a local Facebook group as a last finally cry for help and I was recommend Houston Spay and Neuter. An Amputation? Under $500. I cried from joy. They did a package deal with everything. Amputation, neutering, vaccinations, micro chip, ect. All for Under $700. That is a landslide of a difference. 90% cheaper than those other cruel amd manipulative vets.... This place saved my sweetest boy. Its 2 days post his surgeries and I've never seen him be more free and happy. Thank you.

Love this group! Always busy, never had any real issues. Prices aren't too bad. Some times the front desk is a lil' off their game. They are really good with follow ups and communication.

My senior Pug and I went through a pyometra surgery, and later—following an arthritis diagnosis—we faced another challenge when her stomach didn't tolerate the treatment well, resulting in acute colitis. We are deeply grateful to the entire team that stood by us for over a month; thanks to them, we were able to get Nina back to full health. They were incredibly attentive to every detail and made sure I understood everything; they even answered my questions via text message. As a worried dog mom, they were my saving grace and gave me such peace of mind. Thank you so much for your dedication and commitment to your work—Nina is smiling again! ( Ademas tienen Personal que habla Español y fue de gran ayuda👏🏼✨❤️ )

These folks are the absolute easiest and cost efficient option for TNR in the area. Wonderful to work with. With the help of Fur a Positive Future and other rescue groups, we’ve gotten around 50 feral cats fixed here for Near Northside on our block alone. Hooray HSN!
