How to Save Money at Fairbanks Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We brought our beloved Harrison in for end-of-life support. He was 15 years old. Although we were new patients to this clinic, we were treated with so much respect and compassion that it felt like we had been longtime clients. From Mary, the receptionist who answered the phone and scheduled our appointment, to the other receptionist whose name I unfortunately didn’t get, everyone was incredibly kind and caring. She showed us to the exam room and explained the process with compassion and patience. We had to make the difficult decision to proceed with euthanasia that day, and the staff showed tremendous sensitivity by allowing us to pay for services in the room so we wouldn’t have to stop at the front desk on our way out. The veterinarian, vet techs, and reception staff all reassured us that we could take as much time as we needed, and we never once felt rushed. The veterinarian carefully explained all the details and options, provided professional recommendations, and never made us feel pressured or overwhelmed. Thank you to the entire staff for making such a heartbreaking day a little easier to get through.

Ive been coming here for over 20 years. I drive from Katy to see them. They have helped me through 3 dogs that have gone to the bridge. I have chosen them again with my new baby. Very compassionate, thorough, and kind. Every employee treats you like family. Would highly recommend anyone to this practice.

Ever since the original doctors left it hasn’t been the same. I’ve been taking my kitties to this place for more than 12 years. The new set of doctors are ehhh but I highly recommend Dr. Alla Kiienko, she knows her academics and I fully trust her with my baby she’s very compassionate and I hope she stays at this clinic. I do not trust anyone else with my cat but her. They did change their hours of operation. They used to be open on Sundays but not anymore.

Since the clinic changed ownership and both Doctor Glen Reiger and Mark Reiger are no longer there, their customer service changed, but not for the better. Staff members have an I DON’T CARE ATTITUDE!! I feel it’s not about caring for your pet, but definitely about how much their monetary gain will be. Have been taking my fur babies there since 2008, and it’s time to find a new Vet.

They changed their hours of operation and I didn’t know so I called to tell them I would be 10 minutes late to pick up my Puppy and could somebody wait since I didn’t know they said absolutely not. I have three animals that I take to them on a regular basis and I was even willing to pay extra to somebody that stayed because I don’t want my puppy traumatized by being left in a kennel for 12 hours straight, but they didn’t seem to care. We will be taking our dogs elsewhere for care. I’m so disappointed in this vet clinic. I’m literally in tears over leaving my six month old puppy there after being in the kennel all day to be diagnosed and tests run. No one told us that their hours had changed and the sign is so hard to read now that I’m here looking.
