How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been bringing my fur babies here for 13+years. The staff is amazing, friendly and helpful. The doctors are so great with my very anxious shepherd. Have been on the wellness plan for years. Affordable, comes with extra perks. Definitely recommend. Only thing I can complain about which I know Banfield has no control over is some of the costumers are flat out rude. Yes I have a big dog, yes I have my dog 100% under my control, I do not appreciate snarky comments from small dog owners repeatedly hollering at me “ do you have him! Do you have him” and the best I could muster was “yes I have HER” And then turn and complain to anyone that will listen to her about “big dogs shouldn’t be scheduled the same time as little dogs” Guess she forgot she was at a vet appointment where hello, other animals are going to be there. I can control my big dogs on a leash vs a small dog just sitting in your pocket no leash. SMDH rude is just everywhere now a days.

I always had a feeling my pets were not being treated. I took my cat to a different location, and the vet there diagnosed my cat with liver disease. I followed up with a visit to my regular Bandfield location. Ther was no mention of the previous diagnosis, and not to mention the times my pets went for their comprehensive exams, all to tell me everything was ok, with no blood tests performed or signs of treatment whatsoever. I had a young german shepard, I was very consistent with her comprehensive exams, she died unexpectlly of cancer, I took her to an emrgency pet hospital when she failed to eat, only to find out that she had cancer all in her and that her split had rapture, I had to make the hard decition to put her to sleep, Bandfield never detected and/or mention anything about this, and when I called to find a resolution they made me paid the premium for 9 months after her death. I have 5 cats, 2 Guinea pigs, and a snake. I canceled my membership as soon as I could; they are a rip-off. I can go on and on. My 17 YO cat went for "dental cleanings," and when I picked him up, there was no sign of an IV line or anything that would indicate he'd had the treatment.

I received numerous calls, most notable the calls on December 12th where I received 4 calls within a minute. I was in an important meeting and had to disrupt it to answer the final call and ultimately ended up snapping. I finally scheduled an appointment - specifically mentioning the reason for the visit being the cysts on one of my dogs. By the end of the visit, that point was not addressed. When I mentioned it, I was told I could get an ointment for it. Ultimately, I felt that her needs were not met. Additionally, two appointments for dental cleanings following the visit were booked - without my knowledge.

What’s the point of having a wellness plan with unlimited office visits if when your having an actual emergency they can’t see your pet. Oh but whenever they need payment its really easy to demand it from u. I’ll remember that next month when they try to take money from my account. “Update” Well sorry isn’t bringing my dog back or saying good luck and hanging up on me isn’t either. Friday June 25th 11pm I had to put my Max to sleep. He was in a lot of pain and u guys couldn’t see him because u required to schedule an appointment and all bandfield locations close to us where fully booked.
