How to Save Money at Bend Equine Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've been trusting BEMC with my horses' veterinary care for over 20 years. From critical emergencies to foaling complications, from lameness to lacerations - the high level of professionalism, skills, education, and character qualities the vets, interns and staff bring to their work is unparalleled. To have a team of kind, brilliant veterinarians and interns at the ready, 24/7, to come to the aid of horses and their anxious owners in need, is a true gift to our community.

Bend Equine has been my family’s equine vet for over 20 yrs. They have been incredible with all of our horses. The staff, from the front office to the veterinary assistants to the Dr’s are amazing. We know many of them personally and would consider their team part of the family. Having multiple horses over the years brings many joys but also heartbreak. Each horse is treated with the upmost respect and every issues explained in detail. I always feel I’m in control of my own horses health. And they help me make the right decisions. It’s always tough to get the “ worst” news, but they are right there along you if you need it. Central Oregon is an amazing horse community and we are lucky to have the best veterinary services right in our town @ Bend Equine. ♥️

Drs. Greer and Ward came out to attend to a horse on my property on a Saturday. They were both phenomenally competent, friendly and kind to both humans and horses. Dr. Greer, I found out, is a boarded large animal internist - what a crazy value to get on an emergency call! And Dr. Ward was incredible as well - she had a unique very steadying and calm energy that made me feel reassured right from the get-go. I'd trust either of them to work on my horses any day of the week. We've also had Dr. Findley in the past, who was also phenomenal. We are so very lucky to have Bend Equine in Central Oregon.

Presenting 10 out of 10 lameness on the left front, I called and was received at BEMC for the emergency. It could have been many things. The staff at BEMC was exceptionally thorough, and we discussed tests and protocol every step of the way. As it turns out, I am happy to report that I found a small slit where an abscess is starting to come out. I think it "blew" yesterday because my horse suddenly wasn't lame at all and in fact beside himself for feeling sound after 18 days. Very hard to see...in the top fold of his frog. No toe dragging after numbness from the nerve block wore off. No apparent shoulder weakness or radial nerve issue. I needed xrays for peace of mind... Dr. Shannon and Bend Equine? Peace of mind: thorough, gracious, kind, thoughtful, knowledgeable and experienced. I said, I'm sorry to call you in on the weekend. She said: this is what we're here for. This clinic has evolved over the years: it is filled now with caring, compassionate providers and is something brilliant and perfect for our community. Thank you so much. Dottie Ashley p.s. quarter horses are pretty mellow about soaking, but there are better buckets available that are more safe....

The Dr and 2 asst came out after hrs. on Sat. as after hrs. is when everything seems to happen. They came out asap and were so verry kind and informative and it was such a relief to have them tell me what was going on. Even though the problem was lameness of one leg the Dr gave her a complete exam so didn't miss any other problems going on, she left me with good and complete instructions and supplies to treat her for 3 to 5 days. I got a call Mon. checking on her and made it clear again if it didn't resolve to let them know and more treatment could be helpful. I would tell anyone and everyone what good care they gave, I will defiantly use them again. Twinka
