How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

0/5 stars I am extremely disappointed and heartbroken by the care my dog received following her surgery at this hospital. My dog underwent surgery on July 15. She unfortunately never made it to the two-week follow-up when her stitches were supposed to be removed. In the days following the procedure, her incision continued to drain blood and fluid. I contacted the hospital multiple times because I was concerned that the amount and continued drainage were not normal. I repeatedly expressed my concerns and was reassured that the drainage was expected and that the incision would heal on its own. Because I remained concerned, I took my dog to an emergency hospital two days after surgery. I was told there that the incision would not heal on its own, that reopening and closing it was being considered, and that I should contact the veterinarian who performed the surgery immediately. I did exactly that. When I brought my dog back to the surgical hospital, I felt that my concerns were not adequately addressed. There were pockets around the incision that needed to be but, yet they were not drained at that time. I was charged for the visit and medications were prescribed that my dog was ultimately unable to take. I was also offered additional services, including a heartworm test, during a time when my primary concern was the worsening condition of her surgical incision. Following the 3–4 day surgical follow-up, I continued to call and email the hospital. I sent photographs showing the continued and heavy discharge because I was trying to make sure they understood what was happening. I did not feel that my concerns were taken seriously or that the situation received the urgency I believed it required. Unfortunately, my dog's condition continued to deteriorate, and she ultimately passed away. I understand that complications can happen after surgery, but the level of miscommunication on the hospital's end was unacceptable. What I cannot accept is feeling that my concerns were repeatedly dismissed when I was actively trying to get help for my dog. I repeatedly contacted the hospital, provided photographs, sought emergency care, and followed the instructions I was given. As her owner, I knew something was wrong. What makes this even harder is wondering whether earlier recognition, evaluation, or intervention could have changed the outcome. Losing my dog has been devastating for my family. What makes this even harder is knowing that I did everything I could to communicate my concerns and seek help while she was still here. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this veterinarian or hospital to other pet owners, particularly for surgical care. I believe pet owners deserve to have their concerns taken seriously, especially when they repeatedly report complications following surgery. I hope this hospital takes the time to thoroughly review what happened, how my concerns were handled, and whether anything could have been done differently.

This was my first visit to Vetco, and unfortunately it will also be my last. From the beginning, the customer service was unprofessional. I had just rescued this puppy from terrible living conditions, so I hadn’t chosen a name for her yet. I was asked multiple times if she had a name. After explaining several times that she didn’t because I had just rescued her, one staff member made a comment that her rabies certificate would say “TBD.” Instead of simply explaining, “If you don’t choose a name today, the certificate will list her as TBD until her next rabies vaccination,” the comment came across as rude and dismissive. While I was in the exam room with my puppy, I could clearly hear staff members in the break room next door making comments about me. Whether they realized I could hear them or not, it was incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful. & I addressed them as soon as they walked in. To make matters worse, I overheard someone from the Petco side inform the front desk that their payment system was down and they could only accept cash. Did anyone think to tell the customers, including me? No. They continued with my puppy’s exam without saying a word. What if I didn’t have cash or had no way to get it? Customers should be informed immediately when there’s an issue that affects how they’re expected to pay, not left to overhear it themselves. Between the rude attitude, the lack of professionalism, the comments I overheard, and the poor communication, this was one of the worst customer service experiences I’ve had. I won’t be returning.

I brought my cat here for a routine appointment for a check up & vaccinations. The team did not explain which vaccines my cat would be needing and why, I was just sent an invoice. They took my cat into the back room & had found that he had a minor ear infection, but handled the care poorly. When asked to see my cat, they refused & stated he that was very uncomfortable during the ear cleaning and repeatedly complained that he gave them a hard time, which made us feel very untrusting. The doctor ran into the room, scaring us & immediately told us we would need to pay another $100 for medication. When they returned with my cat, they briefly explained how to instill eardrops for him, but did not go over any other details as to his vaccinations or his prescription diet I had inquired about. The appointment felt very rushed and I feel the team did not make me very comfortable with the care provided to my cat.

They did a great job at diagnosing , the issue that was going on with my cat. The price wasn't too high. Id recommend it anymore who needs help with their animal! And its free to be seen there as well!!

Do not go here. They try to upsell you as much as possible. I took my new puppy there for her vaccines and because she was to small at the time she could only receive 2 out of the 5. They said bring her back in a month or two, I prepaid for all the vaccines. I asked three times because they convinced me to prepay will I have to pay to come get the other vaccines. They said no. Unfortunately I wasn’t there to take her so I sent my friend. They lied and charged my friend a tech fee which is the same amount as a visit. While he was there they try to upsell him more and more. I will never go there again and will also tell all my friends that are looking for a vet to not go. They lost a customer and many more. They are liars plain and simple. Update: I called cooperate and made a complaint the one above and they made it right on the spot. Alan called me and said he disciplined the staff and gave me my money back or my next visit which I went for the boosters free. Only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because they came up to me with what I owe that day and I just said calmly “please I don’t want to argue, this visit is 100% free” and explained why, unfortunately the communication is not well there, I told the front desk about the visit for the boosters bare free given the circumstances, and then vet still came up to me with her iPad trying to charge me. Still kinda disappointing but I added two stars cause Alan made it right in the end. So thank you Alan.. and hopefullly the staff can communicate better and stop making me feel like you’re about to scam me again. Do better.
