How to Save Money at Homestead Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

After being a client of Dr. Toledo’s for over 20 years, I transitioned my pets to Homestead Animal with him. This practice is very clean, welcoming, and organized. I also bring my senior dog to Dr. Salazar when he’s available. He’s very kind, patient, caring, and communicative. The front staff is always welcoming and the techs are very compassionate. Vivi has taken care of me and my Boston Terriers for years now and she’s a true gem. I’m a very anxious client when my dogs have procedures and she’s just the most calming and comforting soul. Glad to bring my pets here for great care 🐾🩷

I had a very disappointing experience at Homestead Animal Hospital. During Nathan's first visit, he was prescribed medication that I did not feel he needed, so I never filled the prescription. On his second visit, I brought him in because he had a cough. Nathani is only four months old . The veterinarian prescribed antibiotics and cough medicine in pill form. Because he was so young, giving him pills was very difficult, so I spent the entire day calling the office and speaking with the reception staff to request a liquid version of the medication. After multiple phone calls, I was finally given a liquid antibiotic prescription, but I was charged an additional $84 50 for the new prescription. I was also given a prescription for the cough medicine with an incorrect pharmacy phone number, which caused even more frustration and delays. I felt that communication was poor, my concerns were not handled efficiently, and charging me again to change the medication to a liquid form was unfair. Overall, I am very dissatisfied with my experience and will not be returning. Hopefully, this feedback helps improve communication and customer service for future pet owners. ❤️ Nathan's mom 🐕

I have been coming to Homestead Animal Hospital for 3 years now with 5 of my babies. My oldest cat who is 7 has been on and off sick for over a year now. I have spent a lot of time and money on many visits to HAH. I am disappointed that after over a year, we are no closer to any improvements and results. It seems like each time we go, they seem confused about how to treat her and recommend a wide variety of things that don't make sense to what she needs - which is antibiotics. They offer me ridiculously expensive estimates for things that she does not need. On my last visit, they would not give her vaccines even though they told me to come back for the vaccines, they refused to give her antibiotics, they didn't do the requested nail trim, and they still charged me almost $90 - for doing nothing. I am happy to pay for the quality care of my cat, but HAH does not seem reasonable. I felt much more secure in the hands of Dr. Greene. I feel like since he passed, HAH has gone downhill. One time we were waiting in the packed waiting area, 2 hours passed our appointment time, and a dog literally died on the floor because HAH could not make the poor woman and her dog a priority. It was traumatizing for the woman and for the others waiting with their pets. If they are packing in visits and not accounting for time in the day for emergencies and other things that come up, then they will always be overwhelmed. I hope they can figure out ways to make improvements for the people that go there, but I will be taking my animals elsewhere for better quality care and overall a better experience.

Dr. Greene greeted us so warmly when we sought a new Vet. He took such amazing care of our babies and always put us at ease with details of their care plan and process. I honestly had so much anxiety after Dr. Greene’s passing, around finding a Vet with similar attributes to what made Dr. Greene the incredible Vet he was. Dr. Toledo has stepped in and taken great care of our babies, and while we know no one will ever replace Dr. Greene, Dr. Toledo has truly set our worries aside, together, with the amazing staff: Alanna, Cristin, Cristal, Cynthia, Viviana. Thank you for always taking such amazing care of us. You are all incredible!

Although my need for the services with HAH was not a pleasant one (had to euthanize my Lab) the overall experience from beginning to 'end' , was what made the situation more bearable. From speaking with Crystal at the front desk, and eventually with the attending Vet, Dr. Ortega. Crystal was very courteous, helpful as well as understanding. Dr. Ortega had one of the better 'veterinary bedside manners' I recall from dealing with some local vets. She was patient in explaining the impending procedure to my 'boy'. Clearly answered the questions I had, and demonstrated empathy. She offered me as much time as I needed to say goodbye to my friend. Overall, I had a very positive experience with Dr. Ortega and Homestead Animal Hospital.
